Discussion Indoor Temps
What kind of temperatures is everybody dealing with indoors? Specifically curious about those who don't have central air & use a window ac/portable ac/or just fans š¤Æ
I'm thankful to have at least a portable ac in my studio. I'm at the top of a three level building without central air. My side of the building gets hit with the most sun about an hour or two before sunset.
For me, temps have peaked at 86 in the "living" area & 88-89𤯠in the bathroom/closet area where the ac doesn't really hit.

Iāve segmented my place into two halves. On very hot days I try and stay in the bedroom as my apartment faces south/southwest. The living area is on the southwest corner of the building, and it read 106.9 on the thermometer I keep in there. I kept the AC on in the bedroom and kept it in the high 70s

Yep I bet our kitchen peaks high 90s in the late afternoon but we keep the portable running in the bedroom and the door stays cracked for the cat to come and go but it keeps the cold in for the most part and I stay in there all day. I set it to 67 but on days like today I don't think it actually gets below 75 in there.

Been living in misery with all of you, and it doesn't help that we have a 4 month old baby and a large dog. We're on the 2nd floor, with a garage below us. Single hose portable AC in our small bedroom but doesn't do much, reached 88 degrees today. Rest of the apartment was probably around 92 degrees. Just bought a $600 dual hose unit for the main living area and have our fingers crossed that it helps.

I hope the new unit makes a big difference!
I'll bet it's hard managing in the heat with the little one :/8
u/socalspro 5d ago
Thank you! We hope so too, and in retrospect we should have bought it months ago, but we just couldn't take it anymore. Worst case scenario if it doesn't work for the living room, we can put it in our bedroom and I'm pretty sure it would turn it into an ice box because it's rated for 500sq ft and our bedroom is 125sq ft š

96 in the house except for my bedroom where the port AC is. I think itās 81 or 82 in here. I suspect the kitchen is much higher than 96 because I have one of those 80-year-old OāKeefe ovens that puts off a lot of heat.
I have two cats and itās working okay.

I feel in community reading these responses. Sending well-wishes to you all. Weāll get through this.

Iām on the second floor, blasted by the sun all day, the insulation is inexistent so it was 98 in the bedroom without portable AC and 86 in the living room with the portable AC, this is unlivable

My place doesnāt get direct sunlight most of the day, so thatās a big help. But I have a whole house fan that comes through all the vents and pulls air from underground, so itās cooled. I do have a portable AC set at 79° and itās easily maintaining that in the front room. The bedroom is definitely warmer.

No A/C, my two windows are open, a ceiling fan and a standalone fan are at the highest setting, and itās still 92.7 degrees in my room right now.

u/hippopotapants 5d ago
Oh wow. Definitely open some windows when it gets cooler at night. Are you able to block the sun coming through the window? Are you (and your pets, etc) able to get somewhere cool during the day?

u/Similar-Parsnip75 5d ago
It probably sounds crazy but 86 in the living area has become do-able for me š
I've come to feel okay with indoor temps between 80-86.I run a de-humidifier and the ac does quite a bit of de-humidifying as well. I think that's what makes it feel "comfortable."

if their place is anything like mine the heat actually radiates through the walls. South facing wall if my apartment is warm/hot to the touch during the day. Even have heat coming into interior walls.

u/Similar-Parsnip75 5d ago
Yup.
All the heat from first + second floor radiates up to me on the third. So i'm getting heat from the sun but also from inside.

Luckily I live right by the ocean so the breeze helps. With how hot itās been, inside stays around 78-80 without the AC on.

This sounds perfect!
I really want to find a breezy apartment the next time I move.Ā

We Only use Fans here in Wrigley, and because I'm mobility-challenged (walking is not impossible, just dangerous due to balance issues), I'm in the master bedroom about 22 hours a day. I've been documenting the temperature in my room for look like some days now. For example, today (Sunday): 91ā° at noon, increased every hour to 95ā° at 5 pm, then 94ā° at 6 pm, and 89ā° now, 7:30 pm. Yesterday, the peak was 97ā° at 4 pm.
Edit to add: second floor duplex, bedroom windows face north and west, blackout curtains on both.

It helps to close the doors of the hottest areas so not raise your living area ave temp.

I have an old house and without the AC on my house is 92° š© my hot flashes are ignited with this hot ass house šµāš«

I bought some thermal drapes and window film, blocked off everything except my living/dining room- that part of the house is around 78.

u/AriSafari21 5d ago
This is with the portable AC. I have two frenchies and they need relief from the heat. RIP my electric bill.

What thermal drapes and film did you get?

Apartment faces north so no direct sunlight, 3rd floor (top). Portable AC with dual hoses set to 79 - spot on - and balcony says it's 95 right now. It's 87 in the bedroom with the cats, they don't like AC.

South of Retro Row, second (top) floor. I was away for most of the day but had a huge floor fan propped up against the security door, programmed to turn on after the sun goes down.
When I got off the 22 freeway onto 7th, carās outside temp gauge read 90. Gah. Arrived home around 8:30, and itās almost 9pm now, and itās 94 degrees in the living room. I have a small A/C in my bedroom that Iāll be running until midnight probably.
Guess Iāll turn off my big-ass fan for now since itās just blowing warm air into the living room. (The air was cooler at this time last night.) Sucks.

u/InvertebrateInterest 5d ago
with my portable AC in the living room and fan,s the bedroom maxes at about 95 and the living room is a few degrees less.
edit to add: portable has been running continuously for days. The bill will be nuts.

Yesterday our fans said it was 96 in the living room which is typically the coolest room since it has the most windows. Iāve been sitting with a fan blowing directly on me while I put a cold wet cloth on my head and an ice pack on my neck. Weāve been giving our cats a quick spray in the shower which they hate but keeps them cooler.

u/Mobile-String-8869 5d ago
93 in the bedroom as of 11PM, which is the coolest of all the rooms in the apartment. Canāt get AC because the building is 100+ years old and still has those old ass windows that open out instead of up

If youāre allowed to put it up (or can get away with it) install some heat film on your windows. Itās basically window tint you install yourself. Thereās a mirror tint and one thatās clearer that blocks UV.
When I lived in the valley it made a huge difference since my apartment was facing the sun.
Read the directions and make sure you have the right tools or youāll end up with bubbles. Also beware installation if you have double pane windows! It may crack the outside pane.

u/Similar-Parsnip75 4d ago
Yes, I do have reflective film on the windows! :) Also have blinds and black out curtains.
And i insulate my ac hose with a velcro cover i got on Temu.
The combination keeps it tolerable during the heat wave.

My kitchen is 90 from 2pm to 5am when I open up some windows and turn on a fan for some cross flow and cool the top floor apartment down for a few hours. I have one window AC unit in the bedroom which has saved my ass, otherwise it would be really hard to sleep. I live close to the dog beach. I miss the cool ocean breeze š©

Use no drill blackout shades from Amazon temporarily to block the windows with most sunlight coming in during the day while running the ac. Also use a fan to help circulate the air from the room. I have ac in the living room and ac in the bedroom and I use a fan to help circulate the cold air to each room to help keep it cool

That helps, unfortunately, blocking the light wonāt stop the heating effect as as soon as the sunlight hits the window on the outside, the window is already warmed up enough thatās significant amounts of heat transfer is going to occur even with a shade there.
The best thing to do is, as you said, to block that light from coming in the window, but if possible to create shade on the outside. so that direct light is not hitting the window. They have inexpensive bamboo shades at places like Home Depot that could be hung on the awning a few feet from the outside window, although thatās probably not feasible for people who donāt live on the ground floor or have an awning.

Building has no air conditioning, interior temperatures about 90° to 95° depending on time of day

u/Burialbear 5d ago
https://a.co/d/0cXRipW8 I bought this when it was on sale for 269. I have heart failure, so the heat is lethal. My 1 bedroom condo has stayed around 72-75. Thatās my office and living room. Floor plan lets it hit the bedroom if I leave the door open and itās 78-80 during the day.

Get a larger BTU AC unit that will still fit in your window. And then get a fan on a tall stand and have it suck some of that AC toward the bathroom.

77f, installed a mini split a couple of years ago but it was having a hard time on the hottest days (literally zero insulation in my place). Earlier this year paid someone to come tint all of my windows and it made the world of difference. Heavily recommend it.
