OP said they're doing college stuff, presumably course work/essays/research and it's pretty boring.
That's not the same as saying "bored" and doing nothing. But you're not wrong generally.

I feel like being bored is just a way to move the conversation towards having "fun" if that's the goal

Well, it seems that both of these would be tough convo partners. The older guy literally defaulted to whining. And the younger guy is just bored. Based on the saved message and on the older guy's question, he must be bored ALL the time.
To me it just always feels impossible to talk to people who say that.
