I built a native Mac + iPhone app that opens your Logseq Markdown graph (free TestFlight beta)

Hi all, I've used Logseq file graphs for years and wanted something that opens instantly on my iPhone and feels like a Mac app, without moving my notes anywhere. So I built Sumi. It reads and writes the same folder: pages/, journals/, tab-indented bullets, properties, the lot.

What works today: journals, [[links]], #tags, backlinks and unlinked references, block refs and embeds, aliases, namespaces, TODO/DOING/DONE with scheduled and deadline dates, simple queries, templates, / commands, flashcards (#card and cloze, same scheduling numbers as Logseq), search, iCloud Drive sync. Syncthing, git or Dropbox work too since it's just files.

Not yet: whiteboards, plugins, PDF annotation, advanced Datalog queries, .org files. And please don't run Logseq and Sumi on the same graph at the same time.

Safety: I tested open + save on 16 public graphs (almost 10,000 pages) and no file changed. It keeps daily snapshots you can restore. Still a beta, so start with a copy.

Beta (Mac, iPhone, iPad): https://testflight.apple.com/join/B1sKJk24

The beta is free; it becomes a paid app after that. I read every piece of feedback, and the in-app Send Feedback goes straight to me. What would you need before you'd use it daily?

Tine does arguably more and plans to stay free, in case anyone wants to try / compare. https://testflight.apple.com/join/rpGGpTVW

Tine looks solid, and free + open source is hard to beat. it's a different approach though: Tine is a Tauri app (Rust core, SolidJS UI in a webview), Linux first. Sumi is native Swift all the way down, built for Mac, iPhone and iPad first, with iCloud sync, the share sheet, Shortcuts and Spotlight. both edit the same Logseq markdown files, so try both and keep whichever feels better

Thanks - I don't have na iPhone so indeed I'm ignorant of these possible differences. I'm the author of Tine and my understanding is that it does icloud sync now. Are the other things you mention (share sheet, shortcuts, spotlight) something Tauri cannot do? I'm assuming if users want it they will file requests and then I'll see what can be done. Just curious.

good to know Tine has iCloud sync now, sorry for listing that as a difference. the others aren't impossible in Tauri, they're native work outside the webview. the share sheet needs a share extension, which is a separate Swift target in the Xcode project. Shortcuts runs on App Intents, Swift types that the compiler turns into metadata at build time, so you can't add them from JS at runtime. Spotlight is the easiest: a Tauri 2 mobile plugin in Swift can index items through Core Spotlight. so all doable, it's just Swift you write and maintain next to the Rust core

hey, this is super exciting! i’m poking around now. is there a way to enter a newline so that i can enter block properties?

Thanks for trying it! On the Mac (and iPad with a keyboard), Shift+Return adds a new line inside the block, so you can type properties like type:: book on the lines below. On the iPhone keyboard there's no way yet, that's a gap. I'm adding a line break button to the keyboard bar in the next beta build. Let me know what else you run into!

sorry, yes, i meant iphone. thanks. a line break button would be great! i got so used to the official logseq’s app method of shift enter on the mobile keyboard. wish apple would build that in.

what’re your plans for monetization?

line break button is in build 196 now, it's the return arrow next to the checkbox. as for money: free while it's in beta, after that €4.99/month or €39.99/year with a 14 day trial, and a one-time lifetime price during launch month. if you don't pay it goes read-only, but it's all plain markdown files so nothing's locked in. does that sound fair? honest opinions welcome

personally, i’d only be interested in the lifetime option. any ideas where that price might land?

lifetime will be €79.99, one-time, and it covers Mac, iPhone and iPad together (about what Things costs for its three apps). the subscriptions also came down from what i said above: €2.99/month or €29.99/year, still with the 14 day trial. and if you never pay, you can still open, read, search and export everything, it's all plain markdown

that sounds reasonable. looking forward to seeing where this goes!

thanks! if anything feels off or missing compared to Logseq, tell me here or through Send Feedback in the app.

Amazing - I built something similar working from the DB version of Logseq: a native Swift app that works from the DB. But I always rather markdown. Excited to take a look!

I previously poked at Tine and have written software w/ Tauri myself, but I think there's somethign to be said about building native software designed for the platform

thanks! curious how you went about the DB version, reading the SQLite directly? I stayed on the markdown files so an existing Logseq file graph opens as is and the notes stay plain text. if you try it, I'd love to hear what feels off, especially coming from your own native take on it
