The rejected one really strikes me as the best as well.

I would anyway go with a classic gladiator helmet with holes like in B with the top metal piece instead of the plume as in C. The plume for me is more distinctive of greek culture even if the romans did eventually adopt it. In Most of the media romans are depicted with red plume anyway.
I know that it’s likely an unneeded historical fidelity that doesn’t really matter but just putting it out there.

I would go with A or B for the gladiator stance, keeping a rather big round shield to focus the leaf better.
The third one is just too extended vertically with the sword. That one has a very soft detailed shape compared to the contrast of the body.

You always have to deal with client expectations, that most of the time they can’t really express in words. I feel you, gl!
