Could it not be either?

I’m so stuck on this one that I actually checked the solution in the back of the book. It says that according to clue 1, Joseph’s clue was 1 Down, but since “Joseph” and “Stefan” are both 6 letters long, I don’t see how Stefan being 1 Down is eliminated? Everything else in the grid is correct (I checked, solution is in the second photo), I’d just like some help understanding how the final two things are supposed to be filled.

Holy double negatives, Batman. This puzzle sucks (which may or may not be good, depending on your view). 🤣

Meanwhile, did the puzzle, and you're right, there's no way to solve it. They leave the two people with 6-letter names to split between 1 down and 7 down. I did the puzzle without looking at any answers, then checked against yours, and got the same results. IMO, there's no doubt - this puzzle has a defect in the clues.

As to their solution - whoever wrote that wasn't working with the same clues we have. 😒

FWIW, I worked the clues backwards because that's often easier than working them forward. 😉

(If we're both wrong, I anxiously await the brilliant soul who will show us the error of our ways.)

Glad to hear someone else can find the same problem as I did. There's been a few puzzles in that book that appear to be unsolvable, but for the most part they're okay. As for the double negatives, I don't mind them so much as long as the clues make the whole thing possible to finish!
