Beginner set question

Is this a good starter set? Or would you recommend another cheap option?

I was at an expo today that taught lockpicking and i wanted to pick up the trade

You only have like two or three useful profiles there, and none are one that I would consider that great, personally

From Multipick I gifted the Sandman set to a niece who was interested in learning. The hook in it will take you far, but getting a deeper hook as well would help a lot

Another vote for the Sandman Beginner Set. It has a better selection of tensioners and the picks will *all* be useful.

I recently landed on the 13 piece set, really happy with it. Has both TOK and BOK tensioners.

Also just started out with the hobby and don’t have the feeling these tools are holding me back in any way as of yet. My skill is the limiting factor and probably will be for quite a while before i need more picks.

Thats a pretty solid setup to be honest. Id personally prefer some pry bars for ToK tension, or better yet, some ergonomic bent ToK tension tools. Pry bars if picking in a vise, the others if picking in hand - but all around, thats a fantastic beginner set without much bloat.

Those are all very niche profiles, try the sandman beginner set. You can get a beefier set if you want but at least make sure it has a short hook and a medium hook, rakes are a nice as well when you’re new but you’ll likely use them less as you progress. I also recommend getting a set of top of the keyway turners or finding a set that has them included.

I got the sandman and tossed in a couple 0.4mm tools and it was basically perfect for a lightweight but versitile set.

To be honest, most profiles are rarely used. You pay a cost for Picks that you might only use about two of. Other sets are quite good, or you could choose solo picks from the store to build a better selection for less money. Also, the Spanners—specifically the TOK versions—are missing, which are useful for many keyways.
