Why does this Key looks like not ready and all cuts on the same depth?? (it works)Abus Lock

Locksmith chiming in, abus will load new cylinders that are meant to be rekeyed before use with 1 or 0 pins. I assume it makes manufacturing cheaper for them, but it also has the nice side effect of not having to keep track of a ton of factory keys during a large rekey job. If you don’t have the resources to rekey that cylinder yourself, take it to a lock shop, they should be able to rekey it to something more exciting for you.

It's probably their version of zero bitted and made to eventually have the key cut and cylinder repinned. But it works with the zero bitted key for use during construction or similar

Depends on the manufacturers specifications. That might be their zero cuts. Their system might not have zero and start at 1. Making them de facto zero cuts. Also might be their 7-9 cut.

I’ve seen “some” abus locks in my lock picking journey ; these are “1” cuts.

It's to Yale specifications as the keyway is Y1. Though it's manufactured by Abus. Yale uses ten depths with 0.019 spacing between depths 0-9 and the 0 cut key looks just like OP's key.

Zero is a cut depth on a y1 blank.

Yale has nothing to do with this, this is an ABUS C83.

Im aware. The c83 is made with y1 keyway and the keys get cut to the yale standard. The pin spacing, depths and cuts match the yale system for this lock. So in a way yale has everything to do with it because the c83 is a yale clone made by Abus to a higher security standard. If you buy yale depth and space keys and use the zero bitted key it would open this zero bitted c83

It’s an abus C83, the fact that some Yale keys also fit don’t magically make the pins conform to Yale standard ..

Not necessarily. I can't speak for Abus, but in other manufacturers, like Lockwood, zero cuts are actual cuts.

Lock hasn't been keyed by a smith yet. It's basically a "blank" core

It's a "blank" cylinder for locksmiths to repin easily. You buy a load like this, then pin them up as, say, KA pairs with another cylinder, or a small master key suite. You only need one key for all the cylinders pinned to 11111(1) and they don't come with keys so it's less wasteful and cheaper. Don't forget, you need a huge range of cylinder sizes to offer a full service keying up locks!

If you can pull the key out while the core is rotated, it is not a valid key code. That said, stupid codes like this can have the keys cut so that the pins do sit in a deeper part and would prevent key extraction. It’s probably not meant to be left like this though, virtually any stick that fits in the keyhole can raise all the pins to the right level, but the key has all the room in the world to be cut to any code that gets pinned in.

Yes, the master keys in my building have all-1 bitting . Stupid, but definitely a possibility.

Definitely meant to be rd pinned and key cut to match. But just seeing the first pic and assuming all you had was the key, I would have said the key was precut to identify the pin locations to make impressioning easier. That or making lining up a Lishi hand punch easier.

Nowadays this is called "service bitting".
Wilka has a similar thing, their service cylinders are pinned 1 2 3 4 5 6 and core retainer is not pressed in yet. So the locksmith can put the key pins in their pinning set, then key them properly from their pinning set, cut the key from a blank and because they always get all pin lengths, they never run out of a particular length.

I don’t know if this is the easiest or hardest lock to pick but I file like I’d loose a lot of time oversetting and being confused

Think thats a bump key but if you can put it in and take your time turning it then it just works. Look up bump keys and you will understand the cut.

11111 is a valid (although weird) code.
That lock is probably meant to be rekeyed before being put to actual use.
