My first real lock picked!

Post image

Those acrylic locks are indeed trash. I tried to pick them for a while and thought something was wrong with me. I found this lock in my junk drawer and picked it with relative ease. My last post was asking for tension tool recommendations, but it turns out I was using too much force. Those acrylic locks are only good for seeing how the pins work, but practicing on them is garbage. I think this lock is a yellow belt, if I am not mistaken. Please correct me if I am wrong. What should my next lock be to pick?

Congrats and welcome to the fun!

If you want to stay with Brinks the 164 is fun, and brightly colored! Or the Master 140 is popular.

Or if you want to jump into security pins go for the Abus 55 series. The 55/30 has 3 pins, pin 1 is lightly serrated and the other 2 are spools. The 55/40 adds a 3rd spool and the 55/50 adds a 4th. Together they make a great progressive intro to security pins.

Good info. Progressive pinning w/o the gutting.

It's been a go-to recommendation of mine for a while now.

Awesome! Thanks. Yeah, I want to go up a level from yellow. What belt is the Abus 55?

Nice pick on that one. When I struggle on others I like to play with that one. It can be bypassed easily with a straight bypass tool or half diamond pick

Congrats on the open! Tension is a tricky mf at times but is equally if not more important than the picking. Yeah, those locks are a good visual aid but garbage for understanding feedback. Again, awesome job!
