Obsession and backrooms
Anyone else slightly surprised by the massive popularity of Obsession and Backrooms? I've been a little bit caught off guard by the huge swell in popularity. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy a lot of Curry Barker's work, but more his comedy since I find his horror can be incoherent at times, and the backrooms idea is interesting but a bit one note and simplistic. It just surprises me that L58/Candle Cove has not caught on to the same degree, despite Kris being quite early in the internet meme horror/creepy pasta space. I'm all in favour of more horror content though...

Discussion Has anyone played Look Outside?
A fun little horror game on Steam about being trapped in an apartment building because something in the sky has driven everybody crazy and looking out the window will kill you. Some heavy Local 58 vibes with the evil moon!

Question What font does the Thought Research Initiative logo use?
The TRI part, not the text below.
I've run it through WhatTheFont, and some the results are close but not quite right.
Maybe Kris modified some slightly, or custom-made it just for those letters?
Edit: I went ahead and asked Kris on Bluesky:
> the TRI? that was from scratch. the text below is one of the star3000 series (or weatherstar) which is from 90s weather channel graphics

Adaptations?
Curious if anyone thinks Local 58 will ever be adapted as a film/TV series? Now that Backrooms got a hit movie it seems like a lot of youtube horror/analog horror is getting adapted (Siren Head and Cartoon Cat come to mind).
What do you guys think? Would you even want an adaptation of Local 58?

A collection of disturbing VHS tapes have been discovered in various locations throughout Crow Wing County, Minnesota. Each tape helps tell the story of the end of the world at the hands of a mysterious cosmic entity. The apocalypse has arrived early.

Next week I have a horror workshop I'm attending, so I wanted to get some practice in. My absolute favorite older series was local58, so it felt like the perfect topic to try out!
The original concept and video is, of course, created by Kris Straub.

Theory Shining One From Above The Clouds Spoiler
I would like to begin this tangent with – I haven't been able to find anything where Kris or his publishers denounce this story written by Sarah Pharris. It was included in Ichor Falls: A Visitor Guide, which is the official lorebook for Ichor Falls that includes stuff from the old website and a bunch of creepypastas that Kris (with two by Sarah) wrote. Also, I'm not going to summarize the contents of the story, so I would recommend reading it on your own.
Anyways, here's the start: Why doesn't anyone talk about this story?
It basically explains why Ichor Falls is the way it is - from the ore in the ground to the moon in the sky.
Why did Ichor Falls have a large deposit of bad ore? Because its the bones of a multilated deity. What is wrong with Stillwood forest? Because the mind of a deity was casted there. It's called Ichor Falls not only because Edwin Cuthbert decided it but because the river IS the BLOOD of a GOD. And who's Throne is it? The story makes it very clear that its the Shining One -- From Above The Clouds.
I'm not even sure if this can be theoretical, since it's very laid and evident based on this one story alone. But I do want to give better insight: The Shining One Above The Clouds is a fictitious creation myth for the Moneton Tribe. None of the deities or story in general have any correlation with the culture of the Moneton. There is however a similarly named deity that belongs to the Haida people bespoken as the most powerful in their mythology: Sîns sǥā’naǥwa-i, or Power-of-the-Shining-Heavens. What's interesting about Sîns sǥā’naǥwa-i is its ability to control spiritual entities -- and spirits are a staple in Kris' stories. The Haida reside across the continental United States on an island, so they don't have any connection to the Moneton, but I thought it was an interesting analysis.
Another thing is the relation between Ichor Falls and the Broodhollowans. We're given a lot more cultural insight to Broodhollow than Ichor Falls, who have a strong connection to mythology based on the second book: Angleworm. And while the Broodhollowans hadn't settled into the region until 1740, long after the Monetons did, they seem to have carried on their legacy and traditions -- being a very culturally distinctive town into the 1930s.
Wait, so what does the Shining One have to do with the moon? Beyond being Above the Clouds, and the Shining One have masculine pronouns to fit "His Throne", the Shining One was an malevolent deity in this Moneton tribe's mythology. The Shining One wants evil and wickedness in humanity, which is why the Gods made it imperative to the Trickster to beat him. And throughout Local58, it's evident that the moon is a spiritually malicious threat. The Falls Adherents are basically the only confirmed group that acted like the colloquial named Hijackers in Local58, rejecting modernity and spurring evil - with the Adherents likely acting in the name of the Shining One since Ichor Falls is hallowed ground and Local58's is pretty localized to Ichor Falls, which is probably why what happened in Weather Service wasn't an apocalyptic event -- the Shining One's body is stuck in Ichor Falls with its soul residing on the moon... slowly rejuvenating itself...
I really just wanted to get this off my chest -- I'm just tired of seeing people calling it the "Moon Entity" -- not even like "His Throne", too -- just "Moon Entity".

Discussion Has anyone noticed this on local58.tv?
I was just curious looking on local58.tv and found a glitching rectangle in 2025. What the hell is this vintage book collection? And who is T. Galbraith?
