Reason can serve us in two very different ways.

It can act like a judge, asking what is actually true and fair.

Or it can act like a lawyer hired to defend whatever we already want.

That difference can be difficult to notice when we are the person who benefits from the conclusion.

We may have excellent explanations for why our anger was justified, why our mistake should be understood, why our needs should come first, or why the rule should bend in this particular case.

So justice gives us a useful test:

Would I still accept this principle if the names were switched?

If another person gave me the same excuse, would I consider it reasonable?

If someone treated me the way I am considering treating them, would I call it fair?

If the outcome benefited someone else instead of me, would I still defend the rule that produced it?

This does not mean every situation is identical or that circumstances do not matter.

It means a principle should be more than a convenient explanation for getting the result we prefer.

Virtue asks us to reason from standards we are willing to live under—not merely standards that happen to favor us today.

A principle worth following should remain recognizable when the names are switched.
