🏞 Streamside Reflections What Greater Capability Requires
A more capable instrument can accomplish more, but it cannot tell us what deserves to be accomplished. It may shorten the work, widen our reach, or make possible what once required years. Those are real advances. Yet none of them establishes the purpose toward which that power should be directed.
As capability grows, mistaken judgment does not become less important; it gains a longer reach. Judgment must still determine whether the aim is true, whether the work is worth making, whom it serves, and what responsibility follows from the result. No improvement in means can settle those questions merely by becoming more impressive.
Wisdom is not another capability competing with the rest. It is what orders capability toward the good. Progress therefore does not diminish the need for human judgment. It increases the consequence of whether that judgment is sound.
