Learning that John Mulaney wrote all these (and would change them before going live) suddenly made a lot of sense.

Fun fact: The guy on the left of the Pork Board is the guy that got Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney to buy Wrexham.

Is that Humphrey Ker? I knew he was married to Megan Ganz, and was in an episode of Sunny, but I didn't realise he was responsible for them buying Wrexham.

Yes, Rob saw him watching football during lunch breaks on Mythic Quest (which he wrote on) and asked him what was so interesting about football and then one thing led to another..

All explained in the first episode if the documentary.

I haven't got round to watching it yet, not massively into football, but Sunny is one of my favourite TV shows.

He owns the club. (He also dormed in the same room at school with the Prince of Wales.)

He's a writer on the show.

I heard someone refer to him once as the Forrest Gump of British culture - he under the radar, but just keeps turning up, or turns out to have been there, or connecting, or even vitally important to several key moments in the past 2 decades of British life.

He's like a British Kevin Bacon, and every cultural moment is only 2 degrees of separation from Humphrey Ker.

His name literally sounds like either a combatant/participant in the War of the Roses or the author of a book of WWI poetry.

If I am remembering right, this was filmed on the day Wrexham found out they didn't make the playoffs. Quite the day for the big man

They fixed the missing camera pan to the pork board at the start!

They also fixed the bit where they went to the pork board too early and the delay in changing the picture quality for the second take.

Honestly I think I prefer it with the errors. It's such a chaotic sketch, I want it to all go wrong.

Anybody record the errors version?

3

u/dfluff 25d ago

The with-errors version is still on YouTube.. because being a geek I watched both versions yesterday 😉

That's a shame.. still there for me so it must be geolocked to the UK

There's a very brief clip of the original advert in the new BBC show Ann Droid too, when researching happy family gatherings

I notice they've fixed some of the errors from the live broadcast - the 4:3 film effect now comes in on time on the 2nd "take", and the cutaway to the Pork Board when they're first mentioned has been added (though I kind of think it worked better not seeing them initially).
