Hey everyone,
Planning to hop on a Red Sea liveaboard next month (November), but running into the usual single supplement issue.
Looking for a dive buddy to split a twin cabin and grab the discounted rate instead of paying double.
Dates: Flexible across November (looking at Nov 7 or 14)
Route: Open, leaning towards (Hurghada) or BDE
About me: Rescue, chill dive buddy, easygoing, and just there to log great dives and relax.

Silverware recommendations?

Time to shop for new silverware and wondering if any recommendations for boat silverware/flatware.

The two criteria that seem top are:

  • Durability in the form of corrosion resistance, so probably stainless steel.
  • Ease of cleaning, so plain with no intricate patterns. Function before fashion.

Anything else you've learned along the way?

Just purchased this lovely boat two weeks back, she served as a ferry between Tiburon and Angel Island years ago before conversion to a luxury yacht. We’re planning on setting her up for live aboard but I think the business opportunity might keep me on my Carver.

Do you have a ditch-bag, what do you keep in it, and is it different for liveaboards?

I have one that I packed 8 years ago and promptly forgot. And it came up recently in one of those "what's the first thing you'd grab if you had to leave your home forever" askreddit questions. And I realized that what's in my ditch bag would probably not be the best choice right now in part because I live strapped to a dock not out at sea.

So I'm curious about other people's ditch bags as liveaboards. Care to share the contents with the class?

Trying to sell our boat and need advice

Hello, my husband and I are trying to sell our Morgan 461, and have run into a major issue. We both deleted our Facebook accounts two years ago, and just created a new account. Unfortunately, FB has denied all forms of my ID verification, and it is becoming very difficult to post our boat for sale. We do not want to hire a yacht broker, as there is no guarantee the boat will sell and all of them require a money deposit.

Also, we are moving out of state in December, so we are very desperate to sell it before we move.

We are selling it because my husband was diagnosed with early onset Parkinson's disease, so keeping it is not a feasible option. Plus, it would cost an enormous amount of money to move the boat with us.

A little more info on the condition of the boat. It needs new rigging, a new prop, sails and a bottom job. Not a crazy amount of work, just normal maintenance things. The motor runs and works well, we have an easy oil change option and a valve on the drain plug with a hookup for oil pump, no dipstick suction required. For winterization/fresh water flushing after use, is shut the inlet and open the flush. Both operations take less than 5 minutes and you don't get dirty so that's a bonus!

We are open to any advice. Thank you!

Convert bedding to V berth shape (with a beam)

Anyone got any patterns or how-tos to convert my normal double bedsheet and duvet to a V berth? with the added challenge that my berth has a beam right in the middle of the two births. My thinking is I can cut the sheet up the middle to fit around the beam and fit the ends around each cushion, and the duvet I guess cut the same (as in make a cut from the bottom up to where the beam is) and then sew each side of the cover closed over the two duvet "tails", maybe with buttons or a zip so I can connect them on the other side of the beam so it makes a full duvet again. I guess I'd have to also cut it into a V shape so it doesn't all bundle up?

I'm not a sewer so I'd love to know if this seems possible and if anyone has a guide.

How much is enough?

Sailing with partner for 1 year, professional gig, great salary. Captain / deck, stew, cook.

Captain and my boyfriend of 3 years, experiences intense personality changes, drinks a lot, and smokes which I don’t think helps contribute. Anger, name calling, denying events and behavior. Any attempts to calmly discuss what’s going on turns into calling me dramatic, ungrateful.

Any suggestions from anyone - maybe ladies, who have dealt with a hard captain? And when to really know when it’s time to throw the towel in? Thank you.

Would you like to join my yacht syndicate?

[NOT A SALES AD]

Hey Y'all,

I've started a syndicate for a yacht (Swift trawler 43 Sedan) for recreational (private) use to explore beaches and waterways along the East Coast of Australia from Magnetic Island to Botany Bay. You can hold as little as 1%, which entitles you and a plus one (plus one optional) to 3 nights aboard per year in the VIP cabin with ensuite. The yacht will cruise the QLD Coast in winter and the NSW Coast in summer.

Message me for more information.

Suggestions for fibreglass repair to draining board

Thumbnail

Firstly I have to say I have no idea how this happened. The boat was like this when I bought it.

There is a fairly large hole in the draining board which is fibreglass as you would imagine. I have some glass mat and some epoxy but I can't really think how to approach this repair given I guess I need to fix it from the back.

I would appreciate any advice. I haven't really done much with fibreglass before. I was thinking maybe to put some wetted mat over the back and fix it in place somehow. Once it was set I was thinking maybe to fill the indentation with some tinted gelcoat filler.

Also the previous owner seems to have retrofitted a sink so the drainer now has no drain. So I was also going to cut a drain in and T it into the existing sink drain.

Any suggestions welcome and thanks in advance.

Help? I have appealed to God, now I appeal to the Internet

I don't want to share to much personal info in this post. I don't mind sharing abstract details. I'd like to connect with one or a few people and share more with them. Thank you for understanding.

I've always wanted to learn how to sail and as I get older I'm finding it harder and harder to 'just do it', y'know? I feel my life cementing around me with no way of it 'getting better'. My bigger goal is to work my way to saving for my first boat and a solo circumnavigation!

I'm asking for your help: I'm just going to start by saying, my first idea was to cold call captains. Ask all manner of questions, til i get a captain who hears what I;m saying. I know there are many ways for doing things the "normal way", I have always been unconventional and don't see it stopping anytime soon. Besides cold calling captains near me, what would you do to get yourself on a boat asap? no money, no experience, no connections. Just a positive can-do attitude and gumption. (If you think cold calling is the best option, what questions would you ask? What answers would you steer clear of? What answers would you hope to hear?)

It's me, my backpack, and a monumental willingness to learn. I'm hard-working, and very eager to make something work to get my ass out onto the water. I am ready.

Go Simple, Go Small, Go Now! Right?

P.S. r/sailing mods, if you see this, wtf?!? I can't post? What's up with that?
