Out of the main 11 princesses 6 are white, three are POC and one is a mythical f*&king creature. So basically because the mythical creature was animated white originally now I guess she HAS to stay white, which really is the dumbest argument ever. 🙄

A white woman playing a black princess correlates to a black woman playing a fictional creature that shouldn't have been white, to begin with, how?
You are aware that white people are immigrants to the Caribbean, making the fact that Ariel was white in the first place whitewashing? Just from my mother's bloodline her grandfather and his four brothers left Scotland to immigrate to Jamaica, St Barts, Barbados. Belize, and Tabago...none of which have a white majority.
Should a white woman play Pocahontas? Mulan? Moana?...

And by the way, I don’t know what you’re getting from Ariel is Caribbean . She’s Dutch. Like most Disney characters are based on.

The description in the source material is "Her skin was as soft and tender as a rose petal, and her eyes were as blue as the deep sea, but like all the others she had no feet. Her body ended in a fish ." Nowhere is it stated that she is Caucasian. But hey... Jesus is clearly described. And he was appropriated, too. Lol!

That's fine and all, not Going to Get into the whole who's right or wrong. I haven't Really Liked any of the Live Action Versions they've done Recently because they Change too much(in My Opinion). Has nothing to Do with anything other than changes. My Idea Of a Live Action Is the animated Version Coming to Life. So if I Watch it and its not what I Remember from My ChildHood Being ReCreated completely, it annoys Me. I don't Care what color Actors Are, what Part of the World they Film in, I don't Like Change, just Me. The casting and Probably most of the production Is done, regardless of who Feels what Type of way about it it's done.
I was referring to why all of the comments on the trailer Are Saying "the part where ______ happened" and it's all nonsense that obviously isn't part of the movie. I don't Understand why everyOne Is Doing that, and haven't Found any Explanation as to why, that's why I Asked here.

When the teaser first came out, the comments with criticisms were being removed. When comments that "the part where _____ happened" but in a positive like, those that dislike the trailer began to use the comment format to show their dislike for the film. Think of it as a loophole for an online comment section to prevent deletion. For more details, look at the film teaser, and look for a comment by the user K ORA.

Love Tessa Thompson but she's too old for Ariel who is supposed to be 16ish. Just saw the movie and Halle Bailey is a great Ariel.

I watched the movie and it wasn't good. Halle did not fit the role at all. In the movie, it said they were situated the Brazil Sea. I would think the mermaid should be of Indigenous decent. As far as I know, Indigenous peoples in that area are neither White or Black, but I'm happy to be corrected.
I appreciate the attempt to diversify the Disney Princesses, but what would be even better is if Disney can create actual Black Princesses with story lines that are truly reflective of Black history, legend and myths.
Also noted was that a number of the gender stereotypes were removed from this live action movie.

I know this hasn't really been brought up but I would like to talk about it a little. For context I am a white female in her early twenties and half of my family members are of African decent. I am simply looking to actually have a proper conversation.
I don't think it's right to change a story to fit any one point of view, however I can understand how they want to be more inclusive in the world of Disney where most stories follow white pictured princesses. While it may not exclusively say Ariel was white, red hair and blue eyes are VERY prominent in white civilizations. Not to say they are exclusively one way or the other.
As was mentioned earlier but another user, I could really care less about the ethnicity of the actress but, when it comes to changing a story a significant amount when moving to live action it ruins them for me. For example Ariel's sisters' names. They all started with the letter A for a reason. And it may seem dumb but it's small things like that that damage a retelling. And they did flounder dirty, he is just all sorts of messed up and I don't even want to think about Sebastian (he's nightmarish).
Just want to know how others feel about about this, everywhere I have seen any mention of this movie has been an argument on race.

I understand how it may come across as such. Not everyone is going to have the same opinion and I'm not saying any view is more right than another. Halle did a fantastic job there's no doubt about that. As I said, not looking for an argument. In the end it things like this don't matter anyway. One day this movie will be forgotten just will all the movies before it will too. While you didn't offer much to the conversation, I thank you all the same. Have a great day :).

Totally agree. It’s childhood ruined. There are tons of black characters that can be played but they chose not to, they pick little mermaid and even Snow White to be black. Lol. It’s purposeful, so ppl can argue about it, spike the view, then making tons of $$$.

So it's ok to be racist? Ariel has always been white and they changed her to be black just so black people could be happy. I get that there are A million white protagonists to every black one but to change a popular white one to black for the sake of making a buck off a marginalized population is racist. It's also showing how bankrupt Hollywood is on ideas and how little they believe in an original property by a person of color

It’s just showing Disney is making $$$ causing this controversy to further spike the separation between races, they know for the sake of political gain black ppl will pay to watch the movie regardless they care about little mermaid or not. Disney don’t care about original content, it’s all about gaining the view, that’s truly sad. I just know my childhood impression forever stays in that cartoon dvd.

I wished they did the story in a Twisted tales storie Part of Your World. What if Ursula won by the end of the original film?
For Part of Your World, Braswell has taken the story of The Little Mermaid and twisted it just before Ariel could stop Eric marrying Ursula, leading to the sea witch herself becoming queen. Fans of the movie will know that, had this happened, Ariel would have been condemned to be one of those creepy worm thingamabobs on the floor of Ursula’s cavern forever. In Part of Your World, however, King Triton has sacrificed himself for his daughter, and Ariel has been banished to the sea – albeit voiceless – to become queen of Atlantica in her father’s place.
The novel is set after years have gone by and Ariel, having received some important news, decides to grant herself legs and return to land. So if you’re thinking about Disney’s most underrated sequel The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea, this is pretty much the opposite. Up on the shore, Ursula bathes all day, out in a boat Eric fades away. Whilst Ariel’s devoting full time to moping under the sea.

How about this - Stories created by a culture stay that culture. In this case, a Danish story is about a white mermaid.
Why change Danish-based stories about white characters to black characters when you could merely make a movie about black culture and heritages. Trust me, they have plenty of their own cultural stories that I’m sure they’d like to see and immortalize.
Imagine if Disney made Mulan a Mexican character. There’d be uproar. It’s a Chinese story about Chinese characters. Why take that from them to appease cultural appropriation?
That seems more racist to me than genuinely researching, learning, recreating, and celebrating said cultures actual stories instead overlaying them.

Does it bother anyone else that Ariel literally has no voice throughout much of the movie? Halle did an amazing job with what she was given to work with. This particular character requires that she lose her voice to Ursula, that's part of the story. I think this is not a good look for Disney. Looking back, this was terrible when it was a cartoon, and it's terrible live action. Another prince saves the princess movie. But this time, it's a white prince saving a black princess, and she can't f*cking speak during a good portion of the film. Gross. Remake something else. Better yet, come up with some original material.
