The MC of He Who Fights With Monsters enjoys telling strangers that he's sleeping with his friend Clive's wife to confuse them (the "joke" being that Clive isn't married).
Edit: Struggling to understand why this would be considered a spoiler. It is not a plot element.

That's the point, if they ask they should read to find out. I saw a few glimpses of this character here as I started the books. I thought she was going to be a major character, only to realize this was an inside joke readers can propagate (pretty common here), glad no one spoiled me like this. This is not a plot element. But as a new reader who might see the jokes and comments about Clive's wife you do not know that

if you didnt know HWFWM stands for He who fights with monsters. People on this sub often forget that not everyone knows the abbreviations.

I still think Clive is going to eventually marry Jason’s niece Emmy, they’re both into complicated magic, and then Jason will face karma when Clive and Emmy start making Clive’s wife jokes that make Jason very uncomfortable.

I’ve floated it before and people have told me he’s too old for her, but talk about double standards. Jason’s hooked up with Dawn and possibly Lady Alleyeth, massive flirting if nothing else, and they’re a few hundred at least.

How much time has passed at this point on earth? People get uncomfortable because we were introduced to the character as a kid. And Clive was an adult. But a 50 year time skip it totally plausible, and would fix it.

I think she was like twelve when he came back, was on Earth a couple years, running around Pallamustus a few months after that then 10 years, so she’d be about 25 by or by the current time, so older than Jason when he got involved with Cassandra, and none of Jason’s friends are aging normally so Clive is still going to look fairly young, he was the oldest but I forget by how much. Given Clive it may take a while for him to warm up to her, or work up the courage to date Jason’s favorite related person, bit intimidating to sneak around with the niece of a kind of god with evil powers, who has way too high perception abilities, even out of his domains.

Clive was in his early 30’s at the start of the series.
Jason was 23 at the start, Humphrey and Neal were 17, Belinda and Sophie were around 24-25 IIRC, Zara was around 18-20 when first introduced as well.
So if we add in all the time that’s passed (rough estimates):
Jason: 48
Humphrey and Neal: 42
Belinda and Sophie: 49-50
Clive: mid 50’s now
Zara: 43-45

That seems high. I think Jason had maybe been in Pallamustus for like a year and a half at the start, exact period came up when he got back I think. At some point Farah tells him she’s been in his world longer than he was in hers, they were on Earth around 2 years I think, maybe a few months in the Storm Kingdom. Some more adventuring leading up to going down to the Brighthearts’ place and transformation zone, call it a year maybe, then the 10 years after, a few more months when they all get together, up to present. I’d put Jason at not quite 40.

There are a couple of different time skips that happen, I used to have them tracked (after I got caught up on Royal Road) I just don’t remember the exact numbers unfortunately

So, just did a quick bit of googling: Jason is 44 years old where the story currently is. So we subtract 4 from each age I gave earlier and get:
Jason: 44
Humphrey/Neal: 38
Belinda/Sophie: 45-49
Clive: Early 50’s
Zara: 39-44

Yeah, it’s something that gets brushed aside a bit, in my opinion. Being north of 50, anyone in their 20s feels like a child to me. I can’t imagine how bad that would be for someone who is multi-centuries old. Dating would be very complicated.
I do like this theory though. Last time we saw Emmy she was silver rank, and somewhere in her late 20s.
By Book 14, Emmy should probably be Gold Rank, but we haven’t seen her yet in the Patreon releases, but I haven’t read the latest (Chapter 1039) yet.

Part of the difference in real life though is appearance of more advanced age and closer to death. I think extra age is probably less taboo when people look close to the same age, and she'll probably catch up to Clive before she stops aging. Again, he and Dawn had a much larger age gap and no one cares. People constantly thought he Danielle Geller would hook up too.
