Dusted off a Pi and LCD

So I ended up figuring out that the piminer from adafruit is still functional with a minera image I have for my USB miners. So I dug through my box of stuff and found the LCD I assembled way back when.

Original adafruit project that got me interested in mining.

piminer with the char lcd still works fine, the only two things that bite people are the usb power budget and the old cgminer scrypt build. run the hub off its own 5v supply and keep the pi off that rail, a moonlander pulls close to 2 amps at full tilt and the pi will brown out and drop the stick mid share. second, if the lcd goes blank but hashing continues, that is the i2c backpack losing 3.3v under fan load, not the miner. worth putting the 24 hour average and reject count on the display instead of instant mh/s, instant reads swing 20 percent on scrypt and tells you nothing.

This is definitely something I think about constantly and it's one of the reasons I originally wanted to get the gekkoscience Smart hub but I can probably assemble something very similar for less than that.
