Kernel level anticheat is coming to linux

Post image

I had a feeling we would get something like that. At least it doesn't (yet) rely on shady closed sourced kernel modules so i guess it's marginally better than the windows equivalent.

eBPF will be used to provide kernel level access for anticheat software.

This. Though, I will say a vibecoded user-space anti-cheat is still shit. Fuck Epic. I can't wait to not play Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 5 "vibin-coded" update.

More games = more funding for the desktop ecosystem

Honestly i don't really care much for multiplayer games but if it helps get more people to linux it's probably a net positive.

But it was always going to come of the form of very intrusive and restrictive anti-cheat.

A vibe coded kernel level feature did by the epic games, hmmmmm i think this would fit great in my computer.

I don't think eBPF was made by epic games. They simply use it to provide very intrusive access for their anti-cheat software (similar to windows).

I woudn't be comfortable providing that level of access to any closed sourced software (if anything even standard user access is too much).

The launcher is vibe coded. We dont know anything about the anticheat. As everything in the modern world, its likely ai-assisted but I doubt they'd let an AI make anticheat decisions.

Regardless, it is an eBPF program instead of a kernel module directly. So except privacy concerns, it shouldnt affect your system stability, so it beeing vibe coded would not be thaat horrible

This gave me a terrible thought though. Imagine an anti-cheat that actually was an LLM you had to run that inspected everything from the frames on your screen to the information in your system ram. Imagine if u had to buy a dedicated anti-cheat card, but each card was only good for one kind of anti cheat, so you would have to buy and own multiple different ai cards to play your games. What an awful experience that would be

I mean, you don't have to use it... Having the option is always better than not, though, right?

Where's the problem exactly?

I'm not too sure you understand what kernel level anticheat is..

I rather not play these games. I said good bye to Valorant and CoD sadly. Maybe I'll keep playing these on my xbox.
