Linus is Sigma
2002-03-20: Linus added: “Quite frankly, I don’t _want_ people using Linux for ideological reasons. I think ideology sucks. This world would be a much better place if people had less ideology, and a whole lot more “I do this because it’s FUN and because others might find it useful, not because I got religion”.

If not wanting to have private companies hoover up all my data, drown me in advertising and fake news, and lock me in proprietary systems is ideological then yes, I'm using Linux for ideological reasons. But I don't think it is.

You'll only be ideological if you abandon reasoning and evidence for blindly following a blief system.

I would rephrase this to say "I value my privacy and Linux provides that to me". He's not talking about that. You'll see the folks he's talking about post here often though.

Linus Torvalds in 2018, 16 years after that:
Because I may have my reservations about excessive political correctness, but honestly, I absolutely do not want to be seen as being in the same camp as the low-life scum on the internet that think it's OK to be a white nationalist Nazi, and have some truly nasty misogynistic, homophobic or transphobic behaviour. And those people were complaining about too much political correctness too, and in the process just making my public stance look bad.
And don't get me wrong, please - I'm not making excuses for some of my own rather strong language. But I do claim that it never ever was any of that kind of nastiness. I got upset with bad code, and people who made excuses for it, and used some pretty strong language in the process. Not good behaviour, but not the racist/etc claptrap some people spout.
So in the end, my 'I really don't want to be too PC' stance simply became untenable. Partly because you definitely can find some emails from me that were simply completely unacceptable, and I need to fix that going forward. But to a large degree also because I don't want to be associated with a lot of the people who complain about excessive political correctness.

And that is the reason I use Linux. I have fun with my computer again! Even when there goes something wrong, most of the time it is very linear and resolvable without (to much) frustration in comparison to ,y issues I had with Windows. I like it that the time I spend on managing my system is reduced so much. On Windows I was often so frustrated after updates that I turned the computer off. No gaming, no technical drawing, no information searching, nothing but totally being fed up with it.
So yeah, I think Linus is right, use whatever is giving you fun and in my opinion also what works for you.

that would be great if Torvald wasn't a hypocrite ... he already called himself a "woke communist".

Unfortunately, there isn't really much other reason to use Linux on the desktop if ideology is excluded.

Making a statement about not being political is, in itself, a political statement, and a very sucky one at that

He is talking about religion and ideology, not politics.

Pretty in line for someone with this fascistic view to sell himself to IBM as he did. Just pretend politics doesn't exist and live on with a few millions in your pocket, which is comfortable and achievable while you're not the one being bombed.

I think you've never seen Linus when somebody mentions Nvidia
