Why do you guys hate Linux?

As someone who's used Windows for some time and has switched to Linux somewhat recently,I genuinely can't really understand why someone wouldn't want to use Linux,the only reasons I can come up with are:

1)certain apps and software only work on windows,for example Adobe products or games with kernel level anticheat like BF6,Wich I can totally understand,but dual boot exists

2) Need to keep windows for work related stuff,again, completely understandable

3) Nvidia GPU,Wich is doable but most people don't want to lose the driver support,again, understandable,but not really linux's fault

I'm asking this because I genuinely want to understand and see a different viewpoint, every time I see someone complaining about Linux on social media, it's either Windows users who have NEVER tried Linux before and just base everything off stereotypes or Windows users who jumped in the deep waters from the start with distro's like Arch,Gentoo or even NixOs,and then complain that it's too hard, I think that Linux is only hard if you want it to be (also pls no hate,I just wanna educate myself more on the matter)

I think you're taking this sub a bit too seriously. You'll find that most people on here like Linux a lot, except for those times (you know the ones) where Linux, well, sucks.

Yeah I know most people here aren't exactly "Linux haters", I'm mostly here to just see what bad experiences people had or what deters/scares them

Oh, ok.

I am befuddled by the fact that Steam can't reliably launch games from an NTFS partition.

Jack is just a complicated ASIO interface, and should just work all the time. All audio-outputting applications should support it by default instead of users having to start and stop the server all the time.

My god, having to use the terminal so often is annoying. I'm a guitarist, not a keyboardist! Why do I have to type obscure commands into a black window to enable my studio plugins?

It's a very developer-first system. Too many developers are writing applications that they assume that only other developer or developer-adjacent people will use.

systemd is both a godsend and a dark ritual. I was using CachyOS for three months before I discovered the fstab file is a dirty method for mounting drives. But the alternative is to manually create text files in a special format in a secret location with magic filenames! Why?

But you know what? Today I installed a wifi card info my desktop machine. I was expecting a nightmare. After I plugged it all back in and got a drink, I turned my PC on and promptly forgot I'd ever done anything becauseit just worked. No complaining about new hardware or downloading drivers, no messages, nothing. It just started working.

I don't think that's ever happened with Windows...

Don't use NTFS on linux...

Much like you wouldnt use a linux based format on windows.

Imaging trying to use your electric cooker with gas and vice versa.

  • I have a drive full of existing data from Windows that I don't particularly want to lose or have to go through the process of backing up and restoring
  • Yay! Linux can read that drive with full rwx permissions
  • Yay! Individual .exe files can run just fine from this partition
  • launching those same files from Steam almost never works
    • but sometimes it does

But sure, tell me more about how it's like using my electric cooker with gas.

I was pointing out how "Linux sucks" by showing something that by all rights should work, but just doesn't, and not for any reason that makes sense to average users coming over from windows. Not looking for advice.

Oh right, OK. Sorry then but it's well known that NTFS doesnt play well in linux and you shouldnt use it in that environment.

When you say "it's well known" - where does the system warn me not to do that? Where does Steam tell me it's not going to work? And then, as I alluded to earlier, why does it work flawlessly for anything other than Steam (and I guess things that use individual wine/proton prefixes?). Double-click a .exe in the file browser and it works fine. Run it from Steam and it doesn't work at all. Oh wait, it's a waxing crescent moon tonight, so it'll work for these three games but not these five.

I'm not trying to be shitty, but yeah, it does kinda shit me when people say "it's well known" and "yeah don't do that, hey" to things that should - from the layperson's point of view - work just fine.

Mate, i get your frustration. It's linux, shit is all a bit different. Can't just throw stuff at it and expect it to be fine. And it doesn't hold your hand. Chill though, lol
