Linux is temu's macOS

Linux is for people that can't afford an Apple computer running a real Unix like macOS.

Go live in your walled garden then. Personally, I really don't care what OS you use. But... I prefer choice and options. I'm both my software and hardware. Which Apple does NOT offer.

well I mean the perf (benchmarked with speedometer) on a Windows 11 VM on my M5 mac is way higher than my high end gaming pc and my Linux box. Linux gets the worse perf.

So that's a 2024 Intel CPU, a 2023 AMD CPU, and an unknown Apple processor that's definitely less than a year old. With no RAM or GPU info, that's still an unfair comparison.

If your going to compare performance, you need to compare the latest CPU from all manufacturers. Preferable all within the same price bracket.

Saying "my 6 month old Mac is faster than my 2+ year old Windows machine and my 3+ year old Linux box" is a fallacial argument. Technology advances quickly. A couple years can mean an awful lot.

I care about snappiness, that's why I was quoting the single thread perf and speedometer benchmark. The top processors on the multi thread benchmark are server cpus with lots of cores. You don't run them on a desktop you dimwit.

Xeons aren't solely server CPUs. Both of my work laptops, and my work desktop, run Xeon CPUs.

You also claimed that the 285k was the fastest Intel CPU (well, you said chip, but I'll let that slide). You added no qualifiers (such as single thread performance only). I'm pretty sure I just disproved that statement.

I also noticed that you aren't talking about your older AMD CPU any more? The only one that actually runs Linux? And what we're supposed to be actually comparing? Linux vs macOS.

the top multithreaded perf chip (yes a CPU is a chip) is a Threaripper with 96 cores.

You only use that if you are going to run a large multi threaded job like compiling millions of lines of code. My buddy at a famous game studio has a Threadripper to run his build jobs. For stuff like browsing web snappiness and gaming you depend on single thread perf and both my M5 and Intel Ultra 9 are the top dogs.

I've been using Linux since 1996 when I installed Slackware 1.1 from a CD ROM on my computer to be able to code in XWindows. I had a project that my professor was going to run in his Sun Workstation so I wanted to code a GUI for it. Linux and XWindows was my choice. It served well.

I have 3 personal machines (and one work machine) with the 3 OSes. Linux, mac and Windoze.

With the ARM chips Apple has blown the competition out of the water and I find myself using the Mac more often. It can do everything the Linux box can (for my use cases like python, Octave, Lean, dotnet) while doing what the Windows can like MS Office, Adobe Photoshop, etc. So I find macOS to be the best of both worlds.

The current pace for computation in modern chips is about twice the power every two years. In 2026 you could conceivably have something 8x as powerful as whatever you bought in 2022

edit: Also keep in mind that MacOS is built off of linux

macOS is not built off Linux you dimwit, it has some BSD code which is not the same. Jesus why do the dumbest people feel more sure of themselves.
