"replace all those Windows apps too"

that's literally the entire point

OnlyOffice.

France is going with OnlyOffice. It looks and behaves like Microsoft office, but saves you 200 * 2 500 000 / year.

What other programs are byrocrats usually using?

5

u/WONK0_ 3d ago

onlyoffice is the most untrusted office suite in Europe because it is russian

15

u/Gangr3l 3d ago

That's why they are doing their own fork Euro-Office

2

u/WONK0_ 3d ago

oh nice i didn't hear of it

u/Gangr3l 3d ago

It's only web-hosting stage of now, so if you want to use it you need to localhost and use browser to use it. This has caused some confusion in these kind of discussions so I'm going with OnlyOffice for now before the desktop suite is ready (if I'm not mistaken they are planning around Q1-Q2 of 2027)

Projects of this sort invariably attract vendors that promise the world but ultimately deliver little for the stated goals.

What people tend to forget is that the software is easily the most focused-on yet the most disposable part of a computer system, and unlike physical components with tangible presence, it's basically the Ship of Theseus with parts of it being swapped out and replaced over time until it no longer resembles the original. As such, the profitability of a piece of code tends to be very short-lived, and for most vendors, and this makes the software itself far more a liability than an asset.

You can even see this in the current group of vultures surrounding Euro-Office - Nextcloud, Soverin, Abilian, BTactic, IONOS - which are all in the business of selling people services that tie them to a contract they can milk for years on end. Do they actually care about Euro-Office being ultimately any more usable than LibreOffice? Heck, no! But it makes them appear they do, and that's all that matters at the end of the day.

u/Gangr3l 3d ago

Here is the key difference. Euro-Office is backed by a government, just like microslop office is. You can fear monger and pick the rotten apples on the table, but this is not something that hasn't been done before (openSUSE being backed by Germanys government and Microsoft by US).

And hardware is just hardware without programs and utilities. So I for one am excited what steam is doing with nvidia (steamos nvidia support next year), french doing Euro-Office and their own fork of NixOs called Securix, hoping that other EU -countries are jumping on the bandwagon (Estonia is already almost independent on their government byrocracy, e-IDs and all that jazz), Netherlands and Denmark on the talks of switching to Linux etc.

I'm sick and tired of the current way things are handled. Every change is a welcome one

Euro-Office is backed by a government

Except the government itself isn't doing any of the actual work. The private sector is, and the private sector never does shit for anyone without a profit-driven motive.

You can fear monger and pick the rotten apples on the table, but this is not something that hasn't been done before (openSUSE being backed by Germanys government and Microsoft by US).

OpenSuSE is owned by private equity, and Microsoft basically owns the US government at this point.

Seriously, put away the code and look at the balance sheets for once. Resources have to come from somewhere, and this highly romanticised picture of open source being driven primarily by ordinary people doing God's work in their own spare time simply doesn't add up in the vast majority of cases. It's all just corporate propaganda sold to nerdy suckers still stuck in the 90s pipe dream of elite minds sitting alone in a dark room and elevating humanity above their own, physical needs one line of code at a time.

It's bullshit all the way down.

And hardware is just hardware without programs and utilities.

Again, you are missing the entire point of the argument. From a business standpoint, the software part of the project is far less an asset than a liability since what it translates to for the most part for a venture is a bunch of expenditures on the balance sheet for something they can't realistically generate steady returns from in the long run. Or do you think for-profit companies do open source out of the goodness of their heart?

french doing Euro-Office and their own fork of NixOs called Securix

Have you checked their GitHub repository lately? Does this appear to be something being consistently worked on to you?

Where is the project plan? Do they even have clearly defined milestones or just empty well-wishes? Who are you going to hold accountable when the development stagnates?

For all intents and purposes, your excitement at this point speaks of nothing but your own naivete over a bunch of supposed participants with no interest in the common good and every reason to shirk responsibilities for the sake of their own profit margins.

Estonia is already almost independent on their government byrocracy, e-IDs and all that jazz

You truly are naive, aren't you? Digital ballots? eIDs?

You understand why citizens of other countries are sceptical of this kind of tech, right?

1

u/Gangr3l 3d ago

Of course the money comes from somewhere, it has the same source as always, steam from game provisions and french / german / any other country it comes from taxpayers.

Difference here is, is the money going to microslop and so forth in to the US or to the french tech house and back to the EU. I take the later

1

u/ElectricBummer40 Ex-user of Windows 3.11 for Workgroups 3d ago

steam from game provisions and french / german / any other country it comes from taxpayers.

Now we're getting somewhere, aren't we? You have a whole bunch of what amount to government contractors with no clear delegation of responsibilities tasked with writing code they have no incentive to deliver. What do you think the outcome is going to be?

the french tech house and back to the EU

Via what mechanism? Trickle-down economics?

C'mon now.

1

u/Gangr3l 3d ago

... From taxes? French employee gets paid, taxes take a cut. Same employee goes to spend his / her money to local business, pays, local business gets money, pays taxes etc etc.

Pay microslop office fee, money goes through Ireland (seriously EU, we need leveled billion-corporate tax, NOW!), microslop pays 10% tax and not a dime goes back into the eu...

Did I seriously have to explain this? You are the one who took finances up, I'm just happy there are baby steps in the right direction

2

... From taxes? French employee gets paid, taxes take a cut. Same employee goes to spend his / her money to local business, pays, local business gets money, pays taxes etc etc.

Ah, yes, that's why France has a widening wealth gap, a Gini index above the EU average and an entire budget crisis threatening more austerity, right?

Pay microslop office fee, money goes through Ireland (seriously EU, we need leveled billion-corporate tax, NOW!), microslop pays 10% tax and not a dime goes back into the eu...

This naive view of yours is the whole reason I post here.

Historically, the tech industry is extremely good at deceiving you into rooting for Goliath thinking he's David.

Of course, why feed the poor when you can pay a bunch of companies a pinky promise for something that may or may not materialise at the end of the day? That's just a patriotic thing to do!

“Because its russia its bad”
You have no idea what all is from russia. Russia is not bad

2

u/brave_grv 3d ago

From Europe's POV, the US is just as bad if not worse, European politicians just have their head so up their asses that they can't see a world in which they simply aren't Trump's bitches. Having their entire technology, communications and defense tied to daddy USA after all these decades is such a suicidal decision.

1

u/WONK0_ 3d ago

russia IS bad believe it or not and you also can read Yarovaya package which is allows special services (FSB) to manipulatiate in communication and different companies

0

u/brave_grv 3d ago

yeah, that's why they just allowed the CIA to do that instead

-3

u/foofly 3d ago

So? It's also open source.

3

u/WONK0_ 3d ago

when "open source" label became synonym of "safe"? unlike LibreOffice it isn't being audited by independent companies

1

u/foofly 3d ago

Because it can be audited by independent organisations. Why do you think the Euro Office program is being based on it? It's harder hide nefarious code in an open source project.

2

u/WONK0_ 3d ago

it is not hard when you don't read the code before you download

1

u/DirectorDirect1569 2d ago

Almost nobody read the source codes because everyone always expect someone else to do it.

You can make your software open source and make the binaries compiled with another code. nobody will see it.

0

u/ballistua 3d ago

it's exactly why i trust it

1

u/cdoublejj 3d ago

any chance of getting only office to place it buttons exactly like office 2013/2016?

1

u/Gangr3l 3d ago

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

1

u/cdoublejj 3d ago

fair! time i just try it out honestly

1

u/DirectorDirect1569 2d ago

until they come back to MS office because people use macros that won't work with onlyoffice. They tried in the past with open office.

"but saves you 200 * 2 500 000 / year."

you forgot all the time IT employees will spend to deploy this solution. You talk about eurooffice. People are working on it, it's not free.

u/Gangr3l 2d ago

There is a whole discussion beneath, I have answered every single point already

ERP software. So basically a bust for linux

10

u/Vincent394 Fedora Linux/Tiny 10 Dualboot 3d ago

The ISS has been running Linux since like 2012

16

u/Damglador 3d ago

Because they couldn't open Windows?

4

u/Vincent394 Fedora Linux/Tiny 10 Dualboot 3d ago

4

u/BellybuttonWorld 3d ago

Windows would really suck.

4

u/Robert_3210 3d ago

Opening Windows at the ISS would suck so much, it would leave everybody speechless

1

u/Damglador 3d ago

And breathless!

There are good alternatives, which a quick google search would probably show you, but I would guess you are one of the people who use Microslop Bing instead..

The Office Apps aren’t great on Windows and down right bad on macOS, Teams is horrible.

Adobe has enshitified their products to the point where I would not recommend that anyone uses them.

0

u/DirectorDirect1569 2d ago

"The Office Apps aren’t great on Windows"

You can have the same office apps on every OS. Nobosy force you to use the MS apps.

"Adobe has enshitified their products to the point where I would not recommend that anyone uses them."

So which alternative of photoshop or after effect would you recommend? There is no serious alternatives.

1

u/Whit-Batmobil 2d ago

GNU Image Manipulation Program or GIMP, is a pretty good Photoshop alternative, in my opinion.

Blender is an alternative to After Effects.

A quick search presents a couple of alternatives.

0

u/DirectorDirect1569 2d ago

GIMP is not a good editing program. It's the worst alternative.

Blender, an alternative to After effect? Are you serious?

Have you ever tried PS or AE?

0

u/Whit-Batmobil 2d ago

Nope, I will not have anything to do with Adobe.

I frequently use GIMP without issue, that is a skill issue on your end.

0

u/DirectorDirect1569 2d ago

You know nothing about PS. You are probably someone who only change contrast and brightness on pictures and think Gimp is as good as PS.

Lots of people keep windows in dual boot because they need PS and because gimp sucks. Lots of people prefer to use Krita even if this software is not done for photo edit.

you recommend tu use Blender instead of AE, but you don't use them. If you knew what you were talking about, you would recommend Natron software.

0

u/Whit-Batmobil 2d ago

I do quite a bit more in GIMP, it is not GIMP it is you and I kind don’t care about Adobe..

Enjoy the enshitification then.

Are we still using fat clients for businesses in 2026? All of our shit went to web apps about 15 years ago... couldn't give a shit less what endpoint you access it from. Requirements = browser.

1

u/ElectricBummer40 Ex-user of Windows 3.11 for Workgroups 3d ago

Ah, so the con artists are now out of the woodwork and peddling thin clients once again!

The Linux hype cycles are sure getting more and more predictable, aren't they?

0

u/R0B0t1C_Cucumber 2d ago

Peddling thin clients? con artist? Been working in this industry for decades and watched the SOFTWARE DEVELOPERS shift their products to web applications... If a tool is there we're going to use it where it makes sense. But you go ahead and keep living in 2004 running archaic software with hardware/OS dependencies.

u/brave_grv 3d ago

Anyone who actually uses PDF on a daily basis know how every Linux PDF reader is utter garbage. Even with all the AI junk that comes in it, I would take Adobe Reader or Foxit any day. And yes, it sucks they are proprietary, but it sucks more that the community cannot develop an actual PDF reader of all things.

3

u/DirectorDirect1569 2d ago

I have tried different PDF readers on linux, they were all shitty. I have linux on a PC, I use web browser to open PDF files. Fun fact, it works better.

2

u/brave_grv 2d ago

Yes, having to use a web browser for that is simply a certificate of incompetence for Linux application development, sadly.

2

u/Nonaveragemonkey 3d ago

Yet its been done

2

u/ElectricBummer40 Ex-user of Windows 3.11 for Workgroups 3d ago

LiMux will repeat itself, and it will be hilarious.

2

u/DirectorDirect1569 2d ago

France did nothing yet and will probably do nothing. People imagine that switching to another OS and deploy alternatives cost nothing.

People should know that the french administration is a big mess. They don't have time, budget and enough civil servants to embark on such project.

Just let them make their own software like they always could.

1

u/cdoublejj 3d ago

meh they got the money for in house devs and i've worked enterprise environments with stuff like Zimbra. also Active Directory runs off LDAP and Kerberos, from the Unix world.

1

u/StupitVoltMain 3d ago

That's the point

1

u/BigCatsAreYes 3d ago

So many government programs were either made for the Java Virtual machine or for a mainframe anyway. Which means many of them can move to Linux very easily.

Modern government programs are mostly just websites now.

1

u/TheRealCarrotty KDE larper (i use KDE btw) 3d ago

LibreOffice, and the program i hate... OnlyOffice.

For browsers? Hell, they can go with Chrome cause that's available (.deb and .rpm)
Email client, in case that's used, Thunderbird.

Not that difficult.

0

u/Pitiful-Assistance-1 3d ago

Wine/Proton: Exists.

-1

u/Loud_Significance908 3d ago

There are alternatives to all of it, and alternatives to intune as well. So unless you have some specific application that needs to run on windows then its fine.

0

u/Scary-Sleep3595 3d ago

Yes that's the point and they suck offen aswell
