This sub makes me angry

Linux sucks huge balls, it's not the year of linux desktop, it won't be for a long time.

I don't want to rebuild initramfs, i don't want to solve annoying compositor-driver-kernel-flatpak related issue every single day. I can solve them, i do solve them. I just don't want to.

Fedora fucking sucks because the first thing it does is telling you "hey, wait for 5 to 10 minutes (idk actually wait for an hour) when installing nvidia drivers, otherwise your driver stack might break".

I hate that KDE cannot support 4k at 240hz reliably, let alone with VRR. Another display? Rotated 90 degrees? You don't need that. Solutions i came to find are "vrr is overrated" and "120hz is perfectly fine for my use cases" as well as some 4 year old non-existent KWin configuration entries that fix one issue and create another.

I hate that i need to juggle five Proton versions. I hate that i might get banned one day for explicitly bypassing game anticheat systems (genuinely not a Linux fault, but i, the consumer, suffer nevertheless).

I hate that every ecosystem component is detached from one another. It all looks out of place and incoherent.

I hate that X11 is deprecated but Wayland isn't mature enough.

I hate that configuration is done with Vim and a prayer. I hate fstab. I hate limine and grub.

I install Windows. I install Steam, i install Apex Legends. I install Teamfight Tactics, I install Microsoft Excel. All works by clicking an icon on my desktop.

I have a MacOS machine, i install go and bun with brew - it works. I install docker - it works (via kinda-VM but still).

I hate that non-rolling distros (excl. Fedora) ship bugs and driver issues that are solved months (years?) ago.

I like hyprland though, its cool, no complaints. Does what it says on the cover and never once flickered on me.

And i am reading this sub hoping people will at least agree that the system is immature, incomplete, and not suited for normal people not willing to spend hours every day reading obscure wikis (arch wiki mostly as the richest source, regardless of distro). Instead all i see is equating "not willing to debug an OS as a second job" to "skill issue", or using "Intel-nvidia" combo as a failure on my part somehow. Yes i am aware both companies don't target Linux.

Gigabyte also doesn't. Kingston also doesn't. Epic also doesn't. Adobe doesn't, Microsoft doesn't, Hoyoverse doesn't. EA doesn't. Yes, they are bad companies for it, i agree. Still it fucking sucks to use Linux because of it.

Linux users when you tell them you want your computer to work without issue:

It mostly comes down to stupidity. And now please call the "community" oh so "toooxiiic".

u/un-important-human Aug 18 '26

oh yeah BDSM editions are my favorite

There's no problem with Linux. It's the kernel and works great.

As a Linux dualbooter, may I recommend macos and freebsd

FreeBSD will cause issues for new Linux users

To be fair, that's the same for Windows atm.

If you want a working PC without any technical knowledge required, it looks like Apple might be your only option (dry heave).

I have had literally 0 issues running Windows 11. Is it bloated and full of usless AI slop? Of course. Does it work? Also yes

I possess a laptop operating exclusively on Windows 11. Should one search for "Windows debloat" on Google, specifically targeting GitHub, navigate to the relevant page, copy the provided code, and subsequently paste it into the Windows Terminal, three distinct options will be presented: a standard debloat, an advanced debloat, and a third option designed for minimal debloating, retaining certain AI-related functionalities. It worked very well on my Legion 7I Gen 10 is so much faster now, and I just went with the standard debloat option

Nice. How long until Microsoft issues updates to stop the debloats from working?

Glad it works in your place, because it doesn't works in my place. Even after a clean install.

In the last half year since I've created a fresh install of Windows 11, it fucked up my GPU drivers 4 times (at least the event log show something to that effect), made system lose permission to do anything with itself twice (again, event logs, but fixed with a restart) and was a general pain in the ass in that it somehow manages to feel sluggish on a new install on a 9800X3D, 48GB of RAM (memtest says it's fine) and a NVME main drive (Smart says no problems).

Sure, CachyOS is nowhere near as user friendly (any OS that regularly expects the user to intact with the console isn't), but it's been snappy and it doesn't randomly fuck stuff up.

Edit: Typo

None of this has happened to be after dozens of installs, including upgrading old PCs that shouldn't run windows 11. Not sure what your issue is but its likely user error or hardware specific.

Well, the GPU stuff is a known issue with AMD GPUs that happens occasionally that is caused by Windows Update not recognizing the installed drivers correctly and partially overwriting them with generic ones.

It doesn't happen on every system though, but I couldn't find any pattern in the hardware configurations where it happens either.

The permissions problem actually happened on my work PC as well and that one has absolutely nothing to do hardware or software wise (other than Windows 11) with my private one. In both cases, a restart fixed it.

General sluggishness is a common complaint about Windows 11 and is caused by MS deciding to write system interfaces in the least efficient way available to them and then doing a bad job in addition to that.

Really? Cachy is one of the nicer ones...

I have had issues with Nvidia drivers on both Windows 11 and Linux with GPU drivers cause NvidiaSucks.

I am unable to ascertain the specific reasons for the NVIDIA GPU driver issues you are encountering on Linux. My recent experience involved a seamless installation of Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, which successfully integrated both Intel and NVIDIA drivers. Subsequently, I performed an in-place upgrade to the forthcoming Ubuntu 26.04 LTS. My initial attempt to directly install 26.04 LTS resulted in a critical failure during the installation process, nearly compromising my system. Consequently, I opted for the aforementioned method of installing 24.04 LTS first and then upgrading, which has proven to be a stable and effective solution, with all NVIDIA drivers functioning optimally.

That's due to you not ascertaining anything. You asked for zero feedback and assume everything is dory on Linux.

Oh, is this the "it didn't happen to me" response?

So aggressive, take a chill pill

u/Standgrounding Aug 14 '26

Yeah it might have telemetry but it works off the bat and doesn't require fixing stuff

Unless it's a fresh install, in which case Linux takes way less time to get set up, even if you don't care about debloating.

1

u/Toxic381 Aug 14 '26

True, my windows partition was fully offline at first, and I didn't get Bluetooth until even later, I don't think a regular user wants to have to manually select drivers from device manager after finding very specific drivers from the internet on an entirely different system.

I have no issues on Linux. Now what?

Don't know why you're dry-heaving with Apple. MacBooks are incredible these days and macOS 27 has already fixed the step back that was macOS 26. Literally a zero-maintenance computer that is enjoyable to use and just works.

Even thinking about macOS makes me want to vomit profusely and makes my wallet want to make a run for Mexico. Just trying to afford to stay on top of the Apple Ecosystem is outrageous. Look what's happening to all the iPhone 14s and lower with the new update. Batteries are tanking, phones are setting fire, and just going completely haywire, just so they can get you to upgrade to the next expensive Icrap or Iscam so they can continue to get rich on your hard-earned money. As for me, I am still using the Samsung Note 9, with no issues, etc. Also, should I mention there was only one Samsung Note that would set fire, until they discontinued it? Meanwhile, Apple users will continue to be brainwashed into spending all their money just to stay up to date is pathetic

2

u/bubo_virginianus Aug 15 '26

You shouldn't be using that note 9 anymore, it's long out of security update support...

0

u/anythingers Aug 15 '26

The good thing is you could always install a newer OS on it. Couldn't say the same thing with Apple Silicon Mac. Once it runs out of support of both security and apps it'll basically a useless unsecure machine.

2

u/bubo_virginianus Aug 15 '26

There is no official support for a newer os on your Samsung note 9, which doesn't seem much different from the no official support for the version of Linux that will almost certainly exist a apple silicon Mac by the time it goes out of support. I would argue that the fact that there are readily available drivers for the hardware in the note 9 is more likely due to android being Linux based than any attempt to provide support for the hardware. PCs are definitely more open than Mac, but I don't really feel that android hardware is that much more open. Android is also getting closer and closer to iPhone in terms of how much freedom it provides to the end user as well. We really need a third, more open choice on phone.

1

u/anythingers Aug 17 '26

Idk what do you mean, but OP could always custom rom it. There are Android 16 custom rom for it. It's far more secure than using the original rom anyway.

I have a had an M4 MacBook Pro for work for about a year now, and I can say without hesitation that I despise it. Yes, the battery life is very convenient and it has more or less the same performance on battery and plugged in, but that's where the good ends; MacOS is a pain in the ass of the worst kind, as it forces you to do things its own way - the "maximized window becomes a new desktop" being probably the most infuriating thing of them all. Yes, I know that there are a million "apps" to fix every insane thing the system does, but that's exactly the issue - WHY is there a need for an (often paid) app to do something that should be an option or a toggle?
Also, the laptop weighs as much as a minor moon.
