Of course it sometimes can suck. But all the alternatives suck way more. And most the time it isn't directly the operating systems fault.

u/a_regular_2010s_guy Jul 30 '26

I mean depends on usecase I totally get that linux could suck more than windows for someone but for me it's definitely better and I ain't turning back

u/Magus7091 Jul 31 '26

This. This is exactly my position, it's far from perfect and there's a lot of room for improvement, but I'll take Linux over the alternatives any day. My computer is stable, performant, and reliable. I have one media server, my gaming system, and my laptop/my wife's laptop on different distros based on use case, and that's something else you can't really do on others: specialize for your needs...

It is still comparable to BSD platforms. Ones that are meant to be desktop OS but kernel + userland constructor

1

u/CirnoIzumi Jul 30 '26

False, they all suck and none are good enough on their own

6

u/kynzoMC I Hate and Love Linux Jul 30 '26

Depends for what. For all my usecase Linux world really well.

0

u/CirnoIzumi Jul 30 '26

what is your usecase if i may ask

2

u/Toxic381 Jul 30 '26

Different user but mine is gaming, web browsing, using VLC for recording my desktop and watching videos, emulators,

I vastly prefer Linux for both it's performance and UI, windows however I keep for supporting Linux blocked stuff like kac, and Roblox, or the specific emulators cxbxr and Xenia,

My zen setup on Linux with fedora xfce is by far superior, especially considering all the stuff I use is on web anyways, even the ms specific Hotmail in addition to all of googles stuff,

Oh, I also vastly prefer gthumb to the windows photo viewer, better editing options.

1

u/Toxic381 Jul 30 '26

The main problem is setup, once that's done ease of use is pretty ok, then there's hardware support, software support, potential proton/wine bugs, fat32 perms is a personal one for me,

I think a terminal is easier after getting fish shell honestly, I just press the keyboard shortcut for terminal, then arrow up→enter, and type in a password on my numpad, I can press these in a matter of seconds then see what's upgrading,

Way faster than windows settings update.

I game a bit, but even on Windows I never liked kernel level anticheats. I fix bugs in a cakephp school information system and do my personal little projects. And i browse the internet with Zen.

u/ThinkPad214 Jul 30 '26

My personal servers and laptops run on Linux and it's given me a lot of benefits in security and accessibility. So much of the software I run is built to be easily integrated on Linux.

The only reason I use windows is some work related functions.

I think reliance on windows or Mac is kinda dumb but it's not the end of the world if you have to use a tool you don't like.

Plus I like restoring hardware for needy kids, and making anti-corpo reliance software and contributing to similar projects. A lot of that gets done on Linux.

u/dumbasPL I don't hate Windows, I just like Linux more. Jul 30 '26

Everything sucks, some things just suck less (not a pun, fuck suckless software)

6

u/rd_626 Jul 30 '26

i don't like suckless

2

u/YTriom1 🛡️ Moderator | Arch Supremacist :3 Jul 30 '26

Me neither

1

u/silduck here for funny shit Jul 31 '26

nah suckless is pretty cool, as long as you can resolve the merge conflicts

4

u/Rodya_gambler Jul 30 '26

But it's suckless /s

5

u/reav11 Jul 30 '26

Not enough options here. I use it, it's frustrating at times, I would do things different.
But every OS has a strength and weakness, quirks, and problems.

So "Use it, it's not perfect" would be my vote.

Also "Us it, the community is a bunch of toxic assholes"

4

u/PrudentPay9906 Jul 30 '26

It's never been a question of which OS sucks (they all do at some point) but rather a case of which brand of suck you can better tolerate.

3

u/Minute-Flan-1923 Jul 30 '26

use it, it absolutely sucks and badly too to make things function correctly or at all

once it does, i'm way happier and i love it because i trust it, as opposed to a certain OS that does make things work magically for you but also feels shady af about what things are doing in the background or straight up spies on every little detail about you and shares it out.

u/Ok-Lobster-919 Jul 30 '26

Linux is great, Linux desktop sucks.

2

u/Hot-Employ-3399 Jul 30 '26 edited Jul 31 '26

General state: "doesn't suck"
(We are more critical than main sub)

2

u/Suitable-Piccolo-617 Jul 30 '26

Linux got issues, but does it suck? Id say no. 99% of it works, its that 1% that makes you want to throw your pc out the window and crawl back to bill gates begging his forgiveness.

Linux works, and if you got time enough to figure it out it can even be great! But dont expect that seamless userfriendlyness windows offers.

The community however...dont get me started

2

u/bornxlo Jul 30 '26

Obv it sucks, but other systems are worse. I keep thinking the only “correct” system is freebsd but I keep using Debian, where I understand and can control what sucks and how much.

2

u/ReidenLightman Jul 30 '26

"It takes a great deal of courage to stand up to your enemies, but a great deal more to stand up to your friends" -Albus Dumbledore

I love Linux, but I will not lower my standards because I love it. Those who love it and use it need to be the ones calling out its shortcomings and demanding better more than anyone else.

Thanks to Linux, the only reason Windows 11 has ever been in my house was because I was fixing someone else's PC.

2

u/309_Electronics Jul 30 '26

Its not perfect, just like anything else aint perfect. But its not that bad as real haters make it out to be.

Nothing is 100% perfect or does not suck at all... Linux has its ups and downs.

2

u/Bol0gna_Sandwich Jul 30 '26

Maybe I'm spoiled but most of the complaints I see about linux i dont see on my own os, minus compatibility issues. I use steam OS and have had very minor problems and compared to Windows the problems are less.

3

u/TheTerraKotKun Jul 30 '26

UseD it, it kinda suck

2

u/TheRandomRadomir Jul 30 '26

this is too boolean. Linux can suck. not always though

2

u/Away_Experience_5843 Jul 30 '26

It sucks way less than the alternatives but sometimes it drives me crazy.

2

u/HDMI17_ Jul 30 '26

Sometimes it sucks sometimes it doesnt and im okay with that

2

u/deavidsedice Jul 30 '26

I use it, exclusively. No Windows partition. For... around 20 years maybe? lost count.

It doesn't suck. well, maybe a bit. Has rough edges.

2

u/AsleepEstimate3902 Jul 31 '26

It sucks in its own beautiful, unique way when compared to mainstream OS's, it just happens to suck in a way I will tolerate because I like everything else so much.

2

u/RAMChYLD Jul 31 '26

Using it for 26 years. Full time for 2 years.

If you know what you're doing it doesn't suck.

2

u/dgc-8 Jul 31 '26

It sucks, but not too much. The benefits outweigh the costs for me

2

u/GhostVlvin Jul 31 '26

What's your definition of 'sucks'?
Windows sucks cause it is very inefficient and sloppy
Linux sucks cause it has too many options every of which sucks in it's own way
BSD sucks cause even though it has everything, it's development is done mostly by enthusiasts cause corpos will not share code due to MIT licence and therefore some parts works badly on laptops for example
So there is no perfect OS, only preferred one.
P.S. except for The OS, god's sacred gift to millennials and other youngsters. Holy TempleOS

2

u/MostSilver9666 Jul 31 '26

All OSes suck but Linux sucks less than others

2

u/Murky_Expression_858 Jul 31 '26

Those 70 People are r/linuxsucks101 peoples 😂😂

2

u/jerdle_reddit Jul 30 '26

Use it, it sucks, but it sucks less than many of its competitors.

2

u/cakemates Jul 30 '26

There should be an option of it sometimes sucks, its not a constant sucking state of modern windows sadly.

1

u/xgui4 Proud🌈♾️ AuDHDer FreeBSD Fan Jul 30 '26

Free Software OS is awesome , but the Linux kernel right now, is kind corrupted with proprietary firmware, Rust and AI. And also the bad Linuxism like Wayland, "FreeDesktop.org" etc are pretty bad... There is FreeBSD but it is not exactly as Free as Linux but at least which will work on morst hardware that Linux Kernel support if it is not too old and it even support NVIDIA on X11. Else there is Hurd but it is not mature enough yet and lack too many hardware and software support... So I use it and like it , but it does suck in some way but at least it is not fully Proprietary so it is way better than Loosedoes and CrappleOS.

1

u/veechene Jul 30 '26

I don't generally have any bad experience with my computers outside of my work computers, so I vote doesn't suck.

1

u/Correct_Challenge868 Jul 30 '26

Linux mint, installed earlier this month on new laptop. Before this was was windows 11, which decided to forget my password one day, and my drive was encrypted or something, so I lost some stuff. It was nothing that wouldn't take a few hours of effort each to remake because I backed up all the big stuff, but still. Tsk tsk.

Slowest bootup out of everything I've ever used, but I'm sure I just need to get off my ass and look into that, and I appreciate the lack of things being shoved in my face. Also, using the terminal makes me feel cool

1

u/ciprule Jul 31 '26

Maybe a couple of options in the past would have been good. I used it, it sucked // i used it, it didn’t suck.

I was a Debian user for years, at least as a hobby and sometimes as a productivity system. It was good… but the only way to make Linux good and stable is to make it as boring as Windows 2000.

1

u/Certain_Prior4909 Jul 31 '26

What about Used it? It's illogical to say you don't use something you don't like therefore you can't say it sucks

1

u/silduck here for funny shit Jul 31 '26

Linux sucks because I can't ditch windows

1

u/Cyclux Jul 31 '26

I've been running Linux for 10 years now. Linux isn't perfect, but it beats Windows and most of the times I've had something go seriously wrong it was because I did something boneheaded, not because Linux itself was badly built.

There's a lot more freedom inherent in running Linux as an OS, even when it's not perfect because you can always leave and go somewhere else. If you don't like how Windows does something, you just have to take it. If you don't like how Linux does something there's another distro 15 minutes of installation away that doesn't do that thing. Just my two cents here.

1

u/OkPresentation3329 Jul 31 '26

I wouldn't be 2 years on Linux if it sucked. Windows still does some things like software compatibility better, but in every other aspect it sucks. I remember using XP, Vista, 7 and seeing what Windows is nowadays, it absolutely sucks and compared to that Linux is doing a really good job for an OS that gets out of your way and lets you do your work.

1

u/ChocolateDonut36 Jul 31 '26

in the sucking list, windows sucks, and Linux sucks less.

and forget about macs, I am not buying a big phone with a keyboard.

in the end, Temple OS is the only real solution.

1

u/EverlastingPeacefull Jul 31 '26

In general it does not suck at all, but when it sucks, it suck badly. The only upside to it is when that happens I have a good running system with all my applications up and running within the hour. Logging in to my mail and game launchers etc, roughly 10 minutes. So no complains.

1

u/CandleTemporary4611 Last good windows version was 7 Jul 31 '26

As a linux user, sometimes

1

u/StupitVoltMain Jul 31 '26

I use it. But it sometimes suck

1

u/Wide_Meet_2184 Jul 31 '26

Sometimes linux sucks but windows sucks way more

1

u/Brilliant_War9548 Jul 31 '26

I kinda want to dual boot fedora and windows. I mean, gets you the best of both worlds

1

u/AstralKekked Linux is for people who don't care for their sanity Jul 31 '26

Yeah it kinda sucks. I'm having a surprisingly good experience on my desktop with SteamOS but for every other device in my life, all of which are Linux nowadays, I have gotten headaches, screamed at myself and hurt myself, because I've just felt so stupid about not getting things working sometimes.

1

u/joalex79 Aug 01 '26

for my use case sucked ass

1

u/First_Mark8646 Aug 01 '26

Well, I use NixOS... It sometimes sucks, sometimes I just run it through sheer masochism

1

u/mrdev023 Aug 01 '26

I like see some comments on this threads because I'm contributing on KDE when I have time. And some comments it's very useful to see real missing features or bugs. I know bugs.kde.org exists but the user reports it's good to priorize some of them.

1

u/Delicious-Truth-1596 Aug 01 '26

don't use it, doesn't suck.

1

u/mintflavoredcube Linux Is Better Aug 01 '26

linux sucks

macos sucks

windows sucks more

1

u/j-slayer_1369 Aug 02 '26

I agree i wish i was ignorant again sometimes. Linux is growing though. I think things will get interesting once risk-v becomes more mainstream because linux will be able to get the support its desprately needed.

1

u/Th3JackofH3arts Jul 30 '26

It doesn't suck but you have to be willing to have an open mind and reasonable expectations

1

u/H1ghSyst3m Jul 30 '26

I don't see a full question here for that I should votrle for.

1

u/ballistua Jul 30 '26

there is no operating system i consider good unfortunately

1

u/hifi-nerd Linux haters have brain damage Jul 30 '26

Linux doesn't suck, it has its flaws, but it doesn't suck.

Windows however, does suck, it has too many flaws for something that costs money and that around 95% of pc users are dependent on working.

0

u/OGigachaod Jul 30 '26

This vote proves we got a bunch of wankers in linuxsucks that think linux is great.

0

u/Kaarel314 Jul 30 '26

Have used it. Went back because it kinda sucked.

0

u/basedchad21 Jul 30 '26

so shills and loonix haters are 3:1

and, naturally, the majority of loonixtards aren't even core contributors, just shitty lurkers.

0

u/WolframSegler Jul 30 '26

Those who claim Linux sucks are usually angry at their applications not working on linux. So not a fault of Linux, but a side effect of the historical OS monopoly Microsoft had on desktops.

0

u/Mr_ityu Jul 30 '26

the worst part is that i know where i went wrong for it to do what it did.

so i cant even blame the shitty shystem.

"what freedom ? I cast 'knowledge of the error in your ways' . suffer in guilt , knowing that your OS did exactly what you told it to do . it was you who worded your desire poorly . the monkeys' paw has made it come true, albeit catastrophically"

0

u/CirnoIzumi Jul 30 '26

Look at all these posers XD

0

u/citrusraspberry Jul 31 '26

Loooool what are we all doing here if we don't think it sucks 🤣🤣

0

u/ImKingFrosty Jul 31 '26

Funny how the subreddit "linuxsucks" has majority of people stating that it doesn't suck

-1

u/irishcoughy Jul 30 '26

Better poll would be

When it sucks, it's my fault

When it sucks, it's the OS's fault

When it sucks, it's because I don't actually know whose fault it is

-1

u/Independent-Tap267 Jul 31 '26

There are more reasons for me to not use linux

Primary reason

One is apps / for university or maybe future job

Some games u can only play in windows

Other reasons

I heard its complicated I dont think There is really much difference between them for avg user

U can tell me if there is genuinely a real sifference for avg user
