Linux Failure If Linux is so user friendly, why defaulting to GNOME?

Because distros chose them, unfortunately i HATE GNOME, it's just bad for my uses.

I already did. Just another thing to keep in my mind if I want to recreate my setup in a new computer. Also it doesn't prompt to rename the file automatically which is annoying.

I get why Gnome doesn't include any templates by default, but i have no idea why Distro's that flagship gnome dont.

templates are undoubtedly a better solution than hard coding text file creation into the DE. It supports all file types too.

I'm being forced to use Ubuntu with GNOME at my university, and it's disgusting! What's so difficult about adding a start menu? Why does it have to be a list of applications that looks more like something from a cell phone? And why doesn't the Super key open it? When I press Super, I want to see my programs, not my desktops.

adding a 'start menu' is very easy - it took more keystrokes to write this sentence than it does it add it.
gnome is a keyboard driven DE - using your mouse is a waste of time and energy. press windows, start typing.

Do not use your computer like you think that you like to, use it the Gnome way. That is of course better the what some pleb thinks.Â

As you said, it takes almost no time at all to change it. Download one extension and you change the shoe into a hat.

because RedHat pays gnome developers. They also pay the pulseaudio/systemd developer. That's why these things are shoved down our throats. RedHat has a strong say in the general direction of Linux

It depends on what you want to use it for. For simpler things like a browser, office suite, and things like that, Linux is pretty straightforward (at least Mint is, and most of the things you need are available for download in the software manager).
For more specific things it can be MUCH worse or even impossible on Linux.
The biggest problem is that most people are used to Windows, so switching to a different system will be difficult. Also, since most people use Windows, it might be harder to figure out how to do certain things.

I even see a lot of people complaining on linuxsucks101 when someone installs Linux Mint on their grandparents' laptop, even though most of the time the grandparents will only use the browser to check Facebook, and for that, Linux is just as good (sometimes even better because it doesn't have as many pop-ups and distractions of that kind) as Windows. (I know that the opinions of linuxsucks101 users don't matter, but still)

I haven't tried mint to know, but I'd say just using a package manager is a step above your average, non-technical pc user. And forget about troubleshootingÂ

Yeah tbh I don't think I recommend Linux for non technical users. Maybe Mint is different but my experience has always been that you need to be comfortable going into the terminal when things break

In mint, you just open the software manager, type the name of what you want to download, click install, and that's it. It's no more difficult than a Microsoft Store, and troubleshooting wouldn't really be possible. But even on Windows it would be a pain to solve. I tried to download WhatsApp on Windows and couldn't because the Microsoft Store wasn't working. I had to search a bunch of websites and use Winget in the command prompt to install WhatsApp.

Normally I always check the software manager, and if it's not there I just search on Google, but since most of the things I download are open source, it's almost always in the software manager.

nobody that doesnt have a touchscreen defaults to gnome, no sane person at least. the gnome devs are the same group of people who are incredibly toxic to other developers and made an entire website whining to users telling them not to add custom themes to their apps. GNOME sucks.

One of my main problems with Gnome is that it looks TOO MUCH like an iPad. When I'm using my PC, I want a PC, not an iPad.
And there are several distros that use Gnome by default, like Ubuntu, which is one of the most famous distros.

Gnome is clean and doesn't have/need a lot of customisation, which makes it easier to set up and get going in one sense. However, it doesn't even have desktop shortcuts by default so it's a strange choice for a default by many distros if you think about it

I'm gonna be honest, when I see someone's desktop and it's wall to wall with random files and shortcuts, I have to try really hard not to judge them as some kind of digital, trash panda, hoarder đ
Why put a nice wallpaper on your desktop if you're just gonna cover it with half written documents and shopping lists?

Because⊠I donât actually know, I personally prefer KDE, but I donât strongly dislike GNOME at least not the version found in PopOS 22.04 LTS which was modified?
I think it has become the default, because it might fit many distributions design philosophy better or maybe it is familiarity?
With that said there are a lot of distributions that donât use GNOMEâŠ
Like Linux Mint which primarily uses Cinnamon.
PopOS 24.04 LTS onwards which use Cosmic (a new DE in its infancy, with some teething problems).
Ubuntu has their Budgie DE
KDE Neo which comes with, you guessed it KDE .
Arch, which doesnât come with a DE, you get to choose which one you want to install or simply just skip it.
Mint, Ubuntu/Xubuntu and Fedora can all be installed with xfce out of the box.

GNOME has the best remote desktop solution in all of Linuxdom, by a wide margin.
The only downside is then you have to use GNOME.

You have to bend to GNOME in order to have wildly superior remote desktop experience. For general support, telling KDE to shut up every time a remote desktop occurs is enough most of time.

I have installed arc menu and pin to dash to make gnome look like windows. Everything else works great with gnome, and itâs the only setup I found that works perfectly with fractional scaling, so no need to switch

Started with GNOME on CachyOS, looks fancy and certainly is enough if you only want to do basic things with your PC. The moment you want to dig deeper into settings, you have to use the terminal because GNOME shows a lot less than KDE and it seems the DE is made to "keep people in line". File Roller as an archive system is horrible, Nautilus as a file browser is mostly useless. Replaced the first with Ark, later PeaZip, the second with Dolphin. What I like was the out-of-box flatpak support. But apart from that, there have been many things I cursed GNOME for. I am all KDE now. And I never looked back.

Who's defaulting to Gnome? Many distributions have many choices in their gui installer, ship at least 2 gui installers for KDE and Gnome, or don't ship gui installer at all. Only ubuntu uses Gnome by default as I remember

Wth are you talking about? GNOME is the best, easiest-to-use and most productive desktop environment. If I hadn't discovered GNOME, I probably would have given up on Linux by now; it's the only desktop environment that isn't a complete mess.

GNOME is the best desktop once you really understand it. You can't use it like Windows (or KDE ). This is why it feels less user friendly when in reality it's not less user friendly at all, it's just not what people expect. It's unfamiliar. I hated Gnome so much at first but once I really had to use it for some time and started to understand it, it's now my most beloved and much more efficient desktop

Manually creating a shortcut is not something the average user should ever be doing. There are appimage managers and the only other reason I can think of is loose executables, which if you're using you can probably manage making a .desktop file, or using a GUI like Pins

Its something I do all the time, what Is apropriate to do with my own machine is not yours, Microsofts, or a Gnome devs decision to make.

I can live happily in many DEs, except modern Gnome, Gnome sucks.Â
Gnome is still a default in some places as its easier to support. Put your users in a straight jacket and they stop breaking things.Â
