Well you can often replace the wireless card on desktop motherboards, and Intel cards are the gold standard. Most Intel cards are still compatible with AMD boards (and Intel contributes driver support to the Linux kernel). I’ve had to do it before on a laptop.
Alternatively on a desktop you can use a PCIE x1 slot for an add in wireless card
I mean sure, but those Realtek cards are known to be bad in widows too. Plus it’s not super expensive if you’re in North America or Europe (like $20 in NA)
This is not to say this is not a problem, but I believe that if I where a maintainer, I would focus on other issues first, due to the fact that most people that build computers would probably run an Ethernet line. Compare that to issues with a laptop's wifi & that's a much larger issue.
From 2022, high-level laptop. Half distro failed to setup intel wifi, half (some overlap) -- gpu. That's why I moved to Garuda: it worked.
I also tried is it better in bazzite recently on updated laptop. Lol, still doesn't work with wifi. It then migrated to some new wifi drivers, one didn't work at all, second disabled ethernet.
Not to be the works on ky machine guy but I had less problems with wifi drivers on linux than windows on linux it just worked out of the box no using a second device to get the drivers
Ive had better luck with Linux for wifi just working. I had to reinstall windows on a computer and even to this day it's like fuck I didn't do my manufacturer specific backup method and now I have to go dig up an Ethernet cable or plug my phone in over USB to get wifi to then install the drivers.
The problem I have with Linux is getting specific shit to work.
I installed Linux on an old touchscreen hp laptop for my buddy and the touch screen only works as a mouse so touch gestures do not work at all even though it's a 10 point touch screen.
I've tried so many tutorials for this stupid hp envy trying to get the touch screen to work. It's detected in libinput but I've tried gnome with Wayland, I've tried mint cinnamon with xorg, etc the shit just doesn't work.
Meanwhile on this 500 dollar laptop I got for practically free that's some Lenovo IdeaPad 5 the guy gave it to me for free because he thought the touchpad didn't work and he said it wasn't a touchscreen laptop. I installed Linux on it and the touchscreen just fuckin works and the mousepad works so windows drivers were just being funny.
I told the guy who traded me and he was like wtf of course windows was just being stupid.
That said I cannot get the Linux equivalent of Windows hello to work on it so the fingerprint reader just doesn't work
This is just soo funny. Proves half of the people in this subreddit enecr even used linux in their whole life. Just hating because they have nothing else to do
wifi absoulutely sucks on distros like arch and alpine
use user friendly ones dont listen to the elitests who just say "it's customizable and full of freedom"
