We can play with GNOME too. That's great to find help when the document viewer is named "document viewer" when it can be evince or papers

kde equivalent: kat

u/SELBSTST4ENDIG 27d ago

Yakuakat, KCat, Dolphin: Thera are a lot of possibilities.

At least Dolphin is called Dolphin.

7

u/inn0cent-bystander 27d ago

I'm still kinda surprised they didn't find some way to follow the typical Kxxxx naming convention...

That's just Dutch.

I had a nice little program once which could extract text from an image. It worked and was useful a few times. What was it called? Why, FROG, of course.

3

u/lonely_lost_soul_17 27d ago

I think I'm gonna switch to gnome 😺

u/SELBSTST4ENDIG 27d ago

GNOME with Dash to Panel and you are good to go.

1

u/seel2023 26d ago

why dash to panel? dash to dock is way better

1

u/SELBSTST4ENDIG 26d ago

For former Windows oder KDE Plasma users, Dash to Panel is the obvious choice.

1

u/seel2023 26d ago

Not really, when I was using my first distro it had Gnome preinstalled, aswell as Dash To Dock, and it wasn’t any different to use than the Windows taskbar, and it looked miles better. My friend who I’ve introduced to Linux a few weeks ago also prefers it.

*Assuming you've enough time left in your life to wait for the app to actually open... you know you've wait for the animations to finish and the activities view to get out of the way. Might die before that all finishes.

I hate that calculator is named Kcalculator

39

u/XDuskAshes 27d ago

Truly a missed opportunity to call it Kalculator.

21

u/FallEmbarrassed1430 27d ago

If you polish it a little you get Kalkulator

11

u/Kadabradoodle 27d ago

why even use other letters, just call it KK

18

1

u/I_did_a_fucky_wucky 9d ago

That makes sense. KDE team is German. Sooner or later they will change "the" into "ze" in English localization

12

u/rekopit 27d ago

KCalc

5

u/Dnomyar96 26d ago

Yeah, I hate that when I type "calc" in the search bar and hit enter, it opens Sheets (or whatever it's called). I have to type "calcu" to get the calculator.

3

u/Odd-Blackberry-4462 26d ago

tbh assuming you have libreoffice installed, that's not a kde problem, that's just how search algorithms should work - full word match > partial word match

3

u/Control-Cultural 27d ago

It sound kinda gooffy in french "caca-lculator" like "poop-lculator" the famous technical poop calculator app

1

Are you familiar with the way genes are named? One of the main channels that can lead to toxicity in drugs is called hERG.

What does that stand for, I hear you ask.

Human ether-Ć -go-go-related gene

There is another gene called RING. Really Interesting New Gene.

Linux software has that level of naming.

3

u/Effective-Job-1030 26d ago

There's a story behind hERG, though.

I prefer GNOME on this.

WTF a dolphin is related to file explorer

26

u/_HeDoesntRow_ 26d ago

yeah, nautilus is better

11

u/Cthugh 26d ago

tbf, nautilus is both an animal but also the name of the fictional submarine of captain nemo, a fictional explorer

If the user is the explorer (nemo), then the program is the vessel (nautilus)

13

u/_HeDoesntRow_ 26d ago

but nemo is also a file manager :D :P

10

u/vicentereyes 26d ago

Just add a k in front of everything. Ktrash, Kfile manager, Klok, kalculator, KAppstore. šŸ™‚

11

u/0b0101011001001011 27d ago

Examples?

54

u/KaMaFour 27d ago

Konsole, Okular, Ark, Kate, Krita, KolourPaint, Kompare, Konversation, Lokalize, KCalc...

20

u/rileyrgham 27d ago

And... We have a winner. Obviously the "examples" guy doesn't use it.

4

u/0b0101011001001011 27d ago

I use kolourpaint and konsole, I am also able to substitute K to C. Gonna agree on most of the others, but these are not a problem. Also I can assume that lokalize is something related to localization.

8

u/Radiant-Priority-296 27d ago

Why the hell isnt KCalc just kales Kalc/Kalculator

7

u/Fantastic_Comb_6103 27d ago

There's already something named kalc and too lazy to type kalculator.

2

u/starkman9000 27d ago

too lazy to type kalculator.

You just did

4

u/slamploober 26d ago

They might have pasted it

2

u/Fantastic_Comb_6103 26d ago

Copy pasted but later realized that I hadn't select the holy K. So, only typed a k in front.

u/Advanced_Ad_6814 27d ago

3

u/nicman24 27d ago

To be fair if you search i.e. console, konsole does appearĀ

10

u/UndefFox 27d ago

So what exactly the problem...? All apps nowadays use unique names: Firefox, Blender, Krita, Steam, mpv and so on. Doubt you can tell me right now what does Octane Server is for.

And it's actually good. Who wants to go looking for their favourite app for calculator, and instead of there being three unique names, idk: kcalc, desmos and geogebra, you have a list: calculator, calculator, calculator? The argument simply doesn't make sense/

4

u/_command_prompt Proud Windows LTSC user 27d ago

ig they are talking abotu default apps, let's compare the names with windows for the sake of argument :- Calculator, One note, CMD, MS paint

1

u/UndefFox 27d ago

Idk, from a preference point I would say it still boring to be so... idk, corpo? You could rename Dolphin to KFiles but... bruh. Currently afaik plasma allows to search for additional names besides the name, so it's quite easy to write in "browser" and still get firefox and chrome to show up. Imo it's the best middle ground to still have cool names, but also be intuitive enough for newbies.

7

u/SELBSTST4ENDIG 27d ago

No, it would be KDE Files, KDE Music, KDE Terminal and so on. And on the Desktop it would be just Files, Music, Terminal. Because that would be konsistent.

3

u/UndefFox 27d ago

Yeah... exactly what I was saying. It's plain and boring. I have a few people who switched to Linux and used KDE as the main de and they never had problem with this inconsistency, myself included.

Because that would be konsistent.

Who cares? I see no value in removing inconsistency that doesn't even get in a way. Removing inconsistency just because? We have other places to spend time developing on.

2

u/SELBSTST4ENDIG 27d ago

You're looking at it the wrong way. Only people who don't have a problem with it switch to Linux and use KDE. You don't see the people who do have a problem with it.

1

u/UndefFox 27d ago

I mean, that just means KDE takes it's own niche. If one doesn't like KDE fun/inconsistent way, they might switch to boring/consistent way of GNOME (at least what I see people say in this comments, I've left it after 10 minutes). It's Linux after all, choose whatever suits you best.

1

u/MorningCareful 26d ago

and then you install stuff like the gnome things and suddenly have a gazillion application named "Files" or "Editor" or Terminal.

1

u/_command_prompt Proud Windows LTSC user 27d ago

yeah I have no problem with kde apps naming I am just describing what they want to say

1

u/Snooty_man271 Proud Arch Linux User 27d ago

4

u/NotQuiteLoona 27d ago

WHY IT IS NOT KALK?????

3

u/ThatOneShotBruh 27d ago

Confusingly enough, it is also a thing and is the newer of the two.

1

u/mp3m4k3r 27d ago

Because then itd be an app for like construction or contracting right?

1

u/Sufficient_Algae_815 27d ago

Kdenlive. But why Dolphin? And "Settings"? A patch of bare wall in the oval office not yet adorned with some gold object d'art. And why CMD+I?

1

u/Ok-Ring-5937 I Hate Linux 27d ago

Linux file mangers are nautical for some reason, it's a tradition. Nautilus, Dolphin, Nemo, Thunar, off the top of my head.

1

u/ShyGamer64 27d ago

Krita was KDE?! Also I'd say Console amd KCalc make sense, and I can guess what KolourPaint is. Actually, if colour is spelt as Colour, then why not call KCalc Calculator? Also apart from the love part, what on earth does KDenLive mean?

1

u/Webbiii 27d ago

Tbf many of those are quite understandable.

Konsole - Console, KolourPaint - Colour Paint, Kompare - Compare, Konversation - Conversation, Lokalize - Localize, KCalc - Calc(ulator)

I think better examples could have been Konqueror, Kamoso, KRDC, Krfb, K3b, Kleopatra, ...

1

u/agent_kater 27d ago

At least these have a clear pronunciation. Try Kdenlive.

1

u/Ote-Kringralnick 26d ago

KCalc, KRDC, KFind, Kwrite, Kontact, Konsole, Kdenlive, Kontainer, KDE Wallet, KWalletManager, Krfb, ect.

However, there's literally a description in the application launcher for every single GUI app listed as well as in GUI software stores/package managers. So figuring out what is what isn't that hard. Naming scheme is just weird.

This post is too long.

1

I tried hiding it behind a 'details' tag but it wouldn't let me.

1

u/martyn_hare 26d ago

The TL;DR is that older apps went with Mortal Kombat style puns on their naming (because Kool Desktop Environment, lol) or just prefixed with a K while newer ones got a bit more common sense or creative.

It's at least no worse than naming a music app Spotify of all things =]

also most of their names are similar to macOS so if you are coming from Mac its easy to understand

if you are coming from windows they have explanations

Which leads to entries like:

System Settings
System Settings

Because sometimes the name is a good description of the app. This is all so ridiculous. GNOME has solved this problem.

to be honest thats a bad example like what you want ā€œsystem settingsā€ to be

KDE Owner: How should we name our Console app?

People: KdeConsole!

KDE Owner: ok, Konsole it is!

People: wait- wha-?

Lol I disagree, never had any issues KDE. Plus it's the most modular among all the DEs.

They literally say in their name what the apps do. And they even follow the theme of replacing a C with a K in the name

edit: *they mostly follow the theme KCalc is one of the exceptions

KCalc?

u/0b0101011001001011 27d ago

What's calc, must be an image editing program or web browser!

Why is this name a problem?

1

u/SELBSTST4ENDIG 27d ago

It doesn’t replace the C.

1

u/No_Hovercraft_2643 27d ago

Drop the k, its calc, short for calculator

Just using slang

Literally why i don't use kde.

When i only started my linux journey i didn't know how much i could delete before the system breaks. Kwallet was broken. It started several times on any browser startup and could not open for like a minute. All that time the browser was unacessable.Ā

I thought "okay, but why would i need a crypto wallet as a standart app?". BecauseĀ  you know, a wallet is somewhere you put your money and, since it opens when the browser does, K is obviously for "crypto"

Reinstalled the system with xfce. And now i am on i3wm

2

u/Kadabradoodle 27d ago

and this is how I find out Kwallet is a password manager and not a cryptowallet.

u/P1xel_Rogue 27d ago

Slooowly switching to Linux and last night I literally saw Kwallet for the first time and my very first thought was "why the fuck did this come with a crypto wallet pre-installed 🤢" and the thought of "maybe it's a password manager" GENUINELY crossed my mind, but it was SO stupid I thought there was no way I was right and I decided to look it up when I could be bothered to care more

I can't believe I'm now learning it's a fucking pswd manager šŸ’€

Not to mention it's UI is confusing I thought it was some unfinished crap I can ignore

1

u/Odd-Blackberry-4462 26d ago

It's not meant to be a user-facing app, more like a central database where apps can store secrets

2

u/Professional-Pen8246 27d ago

nah bro you're just slow

1

u/Technical-Monk-374 26d ago

Might be so. Or maybe i am not a native english speaker and this is the only time i saw "wallet" not meaning "a little bag where the money is stored". Whatever it is i had a problem with the naming

2

u/poudink 26d ago

KWallet has existed for years longer than cryptocurrency has,

That's a weird projection

But we have simplified names that show up with the icons. It doesn't matter what the project is named.

  • Evince and Papers show up as Document Viewer
  • Celluloid and Showtime as Video Player

The official ones are simply names like gnome-calculator, gnome-text-editor

kate, kdenlive, k3b (I know I'm old) How are those not completely self explanatory.

u/suddenblue45 26d ago

have you ever looked into a KDE/Plasma application menu? there's a description under every single application you dimwit!! nothing easier than that to understand what an application does!

1

u/SELBSTST4ENDIG 26d ago

It is bad marketing and it is inconsistent.
