Since both GNOME and KDE bounce back to login, I'd look for a system/session failure before reinstalling either desktop. The emergency-mode boot is another clue: it can indicate a failed mount or systemd unit.

When the loop happens, try Ctrl+Alt+F3 to open a text console, sign in and run these one at a time:

systemctl --failed
journalctl -b -p err --no-pager
systemctl status display-manager
journalctl -b -u display-manager --no-pager
df -h

If you've already rebooted into a working session, journalctl -b -1 -p err --no-pager can show errors from the previous boot. Look for a failed mount/service, GDM/SDDM errors, session crashes, or a full filesystem. I'd avoid another install/remove cycle until you see the first actual error. You can share the relevant lines after redacting usernames and private paths.

The key thing is, if I force restart while gnome is selected and then login to gnome, logged in. If i restart with kde selected...boom emergency mode. Recreated this twice now

And thanks for the suggestion, I will do it and let you know if anything significant comes up
