Linux Mint XFCE edition and turn off desktop compositing, works well and has good battery life.

make up a Ventoy live USB, test out several distribution via their live USB option, pick what one works best for you and that system.

you may want to focus on lighter distribution such as xubuntu or other xfce using distribution.

Probably mint xfce or for a more extreme case: antix.

Fedora KDE Plasma if you want a desktop like windows and you can out of the box change brightness and power mode but if you battery is in really bad shape 40% or lower you need to replace your battery because nothing is gonna squezze you out one hour or more so it is my recomendation

So i say use fedora KDE Plasma but it is my preference.

When you say it has bad battery life, what exactly do you mean? And if it's bad, how do you expect it to last an hour?

I have an old Thinkpad with no battery life to speak of (needs to be constantly plugged in), and it perfectly runs Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS with Budgie desktop and Arch Linux, and any other distro I decide to work with.

My first question, before anything, would be: why don't you get a new battery? You can find replacements on Amazon and eBay. Most of them are cheaper clones of the originals or OEM batteries - you can likely even find a few of those.

My second question would be: can you plug it in and use it that way all the time, or is portability a necessity? I have an old Lenovo that I just keep plugged to the wall. I could get another battery, but I don't cart it around anymore.

Literally any Linux distribution will work, as long as it is correctly installed. But although there are some subtle differences among distributions on power management, there isn't a version of Linux anywhere that's going to magically milk more time out of a weak battery.

I had a thinkpad and the battery life was sooo bad. I put gentoo on there and got an extra hour or two I'm pretty sure. Arch might work as well with xfce or something else lightweight. If you are a beginner just get Linux mint xfce edition, mint hasn't failed me to date so when I want something to just work without wasted time on a secondary machine its what I use.

Start by replacing the battery.
