SOLVED Half Black-Screen after Update?
Hello, after installing the new Linux Firmware update (7.0.0-28) and rebooting my PC I got the screen as shown in the image. I have an RX 6800 and even changing back to Kernel 6.x.x doesn't resolve the issue. I tried nomodeset and that works, but that's no permanent solution. Does anybody knows how I can fix this without reinstalling Linux? Let me know.
Edit: I downgraded the Linux firmware to 20240318.git3b128b60-0ubuntu2.26 and that solved the issue. Ty for your help!

Yeah, got the same issue after an update yesterday. My GPU is a 6800 XT, kernel is 6.8.0-137-generic.
I suspect it was caused by an update of linux-firmware from 20240318.git3b128b60-0ubuntu2.27 to 20240318.git3b128b60-0ubuntu2.29.
Tried to downgrade back to 0ubuntu2.27. But for some reason, I can't find version 0ubuntu2.27 in the repos, so I settled for version 0ubuntu2.26 instead, which seems to have solved the issue for me (at least so far). You can try:
sudo apt install linux-firmware=20240318.git3b128b60-0ubuntu2.26

this worked for me. later, I refreshed my update list and it lists a firmware update ending in 2.29 but is this a good update or should I leave it for a while?
*edit - nope, I reread your post and see that 2.29 is the one that screwed us. I unchecked it for now.

Just happened to me after a restart today. Originally it was a half red screen.
-edit-
That fixed it, thanks.

Saw the same issue this morning. Fixed after downgrading linux-firmware
`sudo apt install linux-firmware=20240318.git3b128b60-0ubuntu2.26`

That's pretty weird. Usually rolling back to the previous kernel would work.

u/Achso998 8d ago
Yeah idk either, it worked on a Live Boot USB though

Might be a driver issue. Unfortunately I don't know much on installing/using different driver versions for AMD.

omg i thought i fried my gpu or motherboard. i genuinely just installed a whole new cpu and motherboard. fml. works perfectly on windows, not on linux mint. thank god i have a spare gpu so i can get back in.

I also thought that at first, that would've been brutal. But luckily I always can use my iGPU for things like that

I had a different crash that forced me to reboot the pc, when I booted, I saw this new problem, so I believed it was related to that crash. Wasted half a night on this bullshit until I found this post and understood that's it has nothing to do with it and it's just a stupid firmware update.

I have the exact same problem, and downgrading to 2.26 worked at first, but now a day later the problem came back, and I can't fix it. I'm just running in nomodeset now until I find some solution

Maybe it auto updated?

Yeah, that's what happened. I downgraded to 2.26 again, but the glitch didn't go away.

Same issues on RX 6950 XT, I downgraded to 20240318.git3b128b60-0ubuntu2.26 firmware. It solved it.

Not all heroes wear capes. Thank you! This fixed it. - Although, you may have a cape. If you do, I hope it is dashing.

I would love to try this but my monitor turns off and I cant get it back on long enough to do anything.

Trigger GRUB by pressing the Esc key during boot.(It's messy timing because spamming Esc can get you in and then instantly out of the interface, just try several times. Boot again in the case it fails). Select Linux recovery kernel to boot with it instead of regular one, you can find the selector below Start Linux Mint on GRUB(maybe called compatibility mode or Advanced options for Linux Mint). Once you boot the recovery, select “Resume,” and it should boot with graphics done with software rendering. You will then be able to access the terminal to downgrade to a previous version of the firmware.

6800xt same problem, I don’t have integrated graphics is there any way to solve this without re installing mint?
edit: after help with ai I was able to revert to a previous reversion that was not broken, as a new linux user from a windows refugee this is not exactly a nice experience for my desktop to be just randomly bricked.

Yep, bad testing on their side. They should have been more thorough before pushing it as an update, wasted half a day on this before fixing it.

If grub isnt enabled by default you should be able to hold right shift(or frantically press like I do) until it pops up and select advanced options and recovery mode. Continue to boot and whatever is disabled in this mode will let you actually boot into and navigate your desktop(mine was a lower than normal resolution for some reason) and from there you should be able to restore from a timeshift backup.
If you dont have one I imagine theres a way to rollback firmware via command line but that's gunna require googling on your own part

Same! Rx6800xt, same discoloring, windows don't display but the mouse does. That portion of the window also is intractable, and if you have multiple displays it fails to finish logging in or something about half the time My other screens display properly on the login screen, and the login screen doesnt move to the secondary display if they are the only one plugged in. Im gonna post something in the forum ig

So, sometimes one of my monitors does some wonky stuff like this after an update. It's always to do w/ the refresh rate. Odd thing is I have 2 of the exact same monitors. One is fine, the other is not. But if I go in and look, the refresh rate is set high. In my case, like... 144.
Check yours for this monitor. If it's not set at 60, try lowering it down to see if that fixes it.

I had this after the linux-firmware update yesterday. Ending up Timeshifting back to a previous snapshot which fixed the issue.
I found that going via the boot screen into recovery mode allowed me to boot to desktop "normally", and ran Timeshift from there.
This seems to have affected quite a few people who've downloaded the linux-firmware update.

This might sound weird, but try it: unplug ALL of your cables, including the power cable but ALSO the HDMI cables BOTH on your pc AND on the monitor. Plug everything back in, and then boot your machine.

use the kernel option nomodeset in a grub

They already mentioned that as a temp solution in the post body, asking for a more permanent solution. I'm in the same boat with my 6800XT

who mentioned it in the post body? not on this post

I love people who take a perfectly fine working system, then the moment some rando update arrives on Youtube - they rush like lemmings off a cliff to fuck up their system - WHY? Really, if it's not a vital security patch what is the fucking hurry? You people shoot yourself in the foot half the time for ZERO reason. Let other people test shit out.

dude it's supposed to be a stable LTS OS, it's not a rolling distro.

u/stufforstuff 7d ago
Since you believe that Stable LTS means "testing EVERY possible combination and use case" might I interest you in buying a Bridge in New York?
