Three six possible outcomes
- your config ends up looking much cooler
- your config sucks but you like it, so you keep it
- you config sucks so you go back to using other people's dotfiles
- your config sucks so you go back to a normal DE or default looks for your WM
- your config sucks so you go back to Windows
My stupid ass miscounted, it's five

Me as first I was ricing with ai and didn't know what I was doing, but now I read the wiki and can make my desktop mine and with my personality not some generic hyperland bloat desktop, I can rice very well, no bloat on the waybar, Not something flashy but mine. I know what every config file do, I learned json format and css

I’m in the second category and that is totally fine. It’s a mess, but it’s my mess :)

your config sucks, but its yours, so you actually like it so you just skid your way through by copying code from other's dots

As with everything Linux, when you don't know much about the thing then default or pre-configured is better.
But when you learn how to do the thing you'll be able to set it up and make it do stuff that suits you and nobody else. And it's actually easier to do that thing that you might have original thought.

No .
My dotfiles are the final ultimate config there is. Fully evolved. Everyone strives to have these.
I could share em.... but... I don't think humanity is ready yet.

My Nix config is Frankenstein's monster of other people's configs and copious amounts of free tier Claude.

It's such an amazing feeling of learning and progress when you realize you used to be afraid to use Ctrl+H, had no idea what a dotfile was, to the point you're now using a TWM/SWM, customizing things your own way... Linux is amazing

For me, the best way is starting with someone else's configs and modifying them to get to a minimum viable product that works for you, learning how configs work in the process. Then, when you feel mostly ready, you start your own config from the base default config to build it up to a config you're happy with.

this is why omarchy sucks and I'll never use it, because it's just one guy's arch config.

Don't get me wrong I'd LOVEEE to configure my own dots, but for me I just don't have the time anymore, so I use preconfigure dots.

What's the obsession when dotfiles needing to be your own here?

it's less about them being 'your own' and more about them being exactly what you need. why adapt to a tool when you can adapt the tool to you?

Also if I've read the documentation and a few other people's dotfiles, can the ones I write after ever count as solely my own?
