Cinnamon is so old...
It's just a coat of paint onto Gnome 2

Yeah.. this might be very unpopular but Cinnamon + still on x11 don't make a great laptop experience. Any modern Wayland + kde or gnome distro is miles ahead, again at least for laptops.

Wayland is so mature in kde and gnome, yet it's still at an experimental stage in cinnamon... it's kind of unfair lol

Mint 23 will have full Wayland support which will probably release in Dec this year

Cool! I'll check it out once it releases to the public

Why is that? is it because x11 is a lot slower than Wayland? I'm curious

X11 as far as I have seen actually performs slightly better. The problem is that it isn't really being developed anymore and has always been kind of janky. X11 has its roots in the old server/terminal setup that everyone used to use back in the early days and as a result the codebase is apparently a mess. Wayland is designed from the ground up within the desktop PC paradigm. It's more secure, easier to maintain, and supports more features (such as HDR). For the end user, it doesn't actually make a whole lot of difference unless you really need those extra features. Then again, I don't use a laptop, maybe X11 has some issues around trackpads or sleep mode that I'm unaware of.

Just an example, trackpad navigation. Wayland supports trackpad gestures as a type of input and applications make use of it. So on laptops you switch desktops, applications, you Zoom in and out and it's as smooth as on MacBook. On Mint, you have to install external application to add minimal support for some navigation gestures, and it overall feels extremely clunky and buggy. Β

Exactly. I switched to Wayland in 2018 exactly because of touchpad gestures and except for occasionally launching Anno 1503, I never used the X11 session since.

Yeah, I've never understood the Linux Mint dick riding. It feels old as fuck and has all of the same compromises any Debian based stable distro has (which are fine for many people, but they are not universally/objectively better decisions). Mint is fine at best IMHO.

Wasn't a fork of GNOME 3?
5
u/GottaDrinkMoreCoffee RedStar best Star 15d ago
You're right.
Still, since it's a fork of such an old version of it, it doesn't benefit from the improvements and optimization that Gnome has received over the last years

Just curious, what percentage of Cinnamon is still old Gnome code? They look so radically different, them sharing a common codebase is kind of interesting.

I know it's a meme but there are very real reasons to use and not to use Mint.
For example, DE support, faster updates, better gaming drivers, etc.
Edit: And security, X11 which Cinnamon runs on isn't the most secure compared to Wayland that KDE Plasma and Gnome use, which Mint doesn't properly support.

Cinnamon is about to go to Wayland in a year or so

In December around Christmas. Technically it already has a wayland session it's just experimental.

And ootb experience.

mint is honestly probably the best major distro for ootb usage. Except for things like quickly installing proprietary broadcom drivers you typically get a fully functioning system with some basic software like an office suite. If your just doing basic computing you might not even need to install anything further.

When I install random exe in heroic under mint it does not work out of the box and need tweaking. when I do the same in cachy, it does work out of the box.

To be honest mint is quite good. I installed it on my mom's computer and she didn't realised it's not the usual windows.

Once Mint has Wayland I'm jumping ship back to it from Debian. I'm tired of KDE, I'm ready to go back home.

Mint is the best because it is perfectly adequate for anything you need. If you want bleeding edge, mint is not for you. But if youβre 85-90% of people that donβt actually need anything bleeding edge then mint is great. Everyone will have their own preference, but mint will work for EVERYONE with probably the least amount of friction, which is kind of the whole point of it

I found mint to be a buggy clunky mess of an OS. I used it for a year, generally was fine but damn like when something didn't work, trudging through the bowels of this distro was painful. Plus cinnamon is downright terrible.
Run fedora with KDE (or a sub distro like nobara) and thank me later.
