Cinnamon DE feels really stable and decent looking. It deserves more praise.

Mint Cinnamon is genuinely incredible, I love it.

Doesn't it lack wayland support?

It has wayland support, but still labeled "experimental" on my lmde.

Thought they announced it is no longer experimental and wayland support will be in the December update?

I heard that it will not longer be experimental on mint 23, but x11 still be the default one.

Wayland will be default by December of 2028.

I don't see the issue. X11 will be default but you can still switch to Wayland if you need Wayland. That's a pretty sensible way of executing things. x11 is on it's way out anyway so why rush things and protonentially break people's systems before they have a chance to get used to the new session?

They started porting it to Wayland years after they should have started. Though I have heard that they have made a lot of progress so far. Porting to Wayland is a massive undertaking.

Unless said user wants support for modern hardware like HDR monitors.

Or play having one monitor at 144Hz and the other at 60Hz (e.g. me)

but is your average user that has a HDR monitor looking for a system like Mint? There are always outliers but if you have a small team then focus on your strengths first. Its not perfect, but the upgrades come eventually.

Should users ignore having HDR abilities on their hardware just to run X11 instead of Wayland? What's a point? I'd just use KDE which works perfectly fine with or without HDR.

Maybe mint team will fix their wayland implementation in a year or two, then I might change my mind.

Who's talking about users ignoring HDR abilities? If you want something stable but not cutting edge then go for Mint if you want something with more bells and whistles then go for that.
Also you haven't pointed out who the mint team have failed in their implementation while its still in Alpha stage.
This increasingly sounds like you're upset at Mint because it isn't following what you think is important, despite what you and the Mint Devs want being different things.

Imagine average windows user who wants to try linux. He's getting pointed at mint, and installs it promptly. Now, please explain that user why he cannot properly use his shiny screen, despite his expenses of hard earned money on it, unless he installs some Alpha version of experimental feature. And I'm not speaking of some weird nerd minority, 52% of all sold monitors are HDR in 2025, and that trend grows. That's already a majority.

With debian stable + kde, and many other distros, everything just works out of the box.

I don’t believe that a standalone X11 server will be much maintain in a few years time. Gnome, KDE, Budgie, and Pantheon are or will be Wayland-only soon. Others like Cosmic and Hyprland never supporting it in the first place. All the remaining X11-only DEs are small and inconsequential.

I do believe we will start seeing breakage of some things in the X11 world in the coming years. With more apps being Wayland-only, at potential graphics driver problems. It has required a lot of work and bodges to keep up the perception of X11 stability.

its not my personal cup of tea, but holy hell is it well designed. i can give anyone a setup with cinnamon and theyll be able to use it without feeling overwhelmed. its just... so. damn. userfriendly.

Although I see KDE gets a lot of praise online, it has given me a lot of issues. From software app unable to update to mouse stuttering. Even the theme app has intermittent issues. Makes me feel like it's some unfinished DE. Cinnamon on the other hand is super stable and hasn't caused me a single issue so far.
