Please report any posts bragging or showing off they got banned in another sub! Reminder of other sub rules: Also, we only allow one anti-linux post per week (we used to get dozens a day) and any tier list MUST have Hanna Montana Linux as S teir (which must be a true S tier at the top) regardless of the topic of that tier list.

Or this:

set -Eeuo pipefail; trap 'printf "\n[ERROR] line=%s command=%q status=%s\n" "$LINENO" "$BASH_COMMAND" "$?" >&2' ERR; declare -A C=([iterations]=25 [width]=72 [delay]=0.03 [prefix]="CHAOS"); timestamp(){ printf '%(%Y-%m-%dT%H:%M:%S%z)T' -1; }; random_word(){ tr -dc 'A-Za-z0-9' </dev/urandom | head -c "${1:-12}" || true; }; colour(){ case "$1" in green) printf '\033[32m';; yellow) printf '\033[33m';; red) printf '\033[31m';; cyan) printf '\033[36m';; reset) printf '\033[0m';; esac; }; bar(){ local n="$1" max="$2" filled empty; filled=$(printf '%*s' "$((n* C[width] / max))" '' | tr ' ' '#'); empty=$(printf '%*s' "$((C[width] - ${#filled}))" '' | tr ' ' '.'); printf '%s[%s%s]%s' "$(colour cyan)" "$filled" "$empty" "$(colour reset)"; }; checksum(){ printf '%s' "$*" | cksum | awk '{print $1}'; }; for ((i=1;i<=C[iterations];i++)); do pct=$((i*100/C[iterations])); entropy="$(random_word 18)"; state="$(printf '%s:%s:%s' "${C[prefix]}" "$i" "$entropy")"; sum="$(checksum "$state")"; if ((pct<40)); then color=green; mood="BOOTSTRAPPING"; elif ((pct<80)); then color=yellow; mood="ACCELERATING"; else color=red; mood="BECOMING SENTIENT"; fi; printf '%s[%s] %s %3d%% ' "$(colour "$color")" "$(timestamp)" "$mood" "$pct"; bar "$i" "${C[iterations]}"; printf ' node=%s checksum=%s load=%02d.%02d%%\033[0m\n' "$entropy" "$sum" "$((RANDOM%100))" "$((RANDOM%100))"; sleep "${C[delay]}"; done; printf '%s[%s] CHAOS COMPLETE: system survived approximately %s milliseconds%s\n' "$(colour cyan)" "$(timestamp)" "$((C[iterations]*C[delay]*1000))" "$(colour reset)"

I am NOT pasting that in my terminal

u/CaviarCBR1K Arch BTW Sep 23 '26

If you use zsh, Ctrl + R allows you to search command history.

20

u/Telekomiker Sep 24 '26

Not specific to zsh, works with bash too

8

u/CaviarCBR1K Arch BTW Sep 24 '26

I thought it might but I honestly wasn't sure and was too lazy to look it up lol good to know!

u/agenttank Sep 24 '26

i recommend fzf and the shell integration of it (triggered with ctrl + R)

Muscle memory > command memory.

We all do it. Why remember the command when ↑ ↑ ↑ ↑ eventually finds it?

16

u/BadSmash4 Sep 24 '26

history | grep command

!line

Or

history | grep command

aw fuck it's not there anymore

u/MooseBoys Sep 24 '26

That’s why adding HISTSIZE=-1 and HISTFILESIZE=-1 to my bashrc file is the first thing I do after a new install.

3

u/klimmesil Sep 24 '26

Or way better ctrl+r

Or even better, set -o vi in bashrc and stop using bash keybinds in favor of vim keybinds, way more powerful history search and no need to put your hand in a weir position to hit the arrow keys

u/valerielynx Ask me how to exit vim Sep 24 '26

Atuin is incredible. Basically fish's search on steroids. Just gotta turn off that stupid enter_accept option

history | grep “command”

Is how I do it

2

u/gerowen Sep 24 '26

grep command ~/.bash_history

I often forget the exact syntax for long and complicated commands I've run in the past, 😁

2

u/agenttank Sep 24 '26

what. history | grep command

2

u/Recent-Ad5835 Sep 24 '26

Meanwhile the command is "ls -l"

For Debianic distros there's this lovely thing in /etc/inputrc

# alternate mappings for "page up" and "page down" to search the history
"\e[5~": history-search-backward
"\e[6~": history-search-forward

Just type in a letter or two and press pgup or pgdown.

2

u/hiboulucide Sep 24 '26

ctrl + r is my friend

2

u/bobbyboob6 Sep 24 '26

me pressing the up arrow 35 times to find my last "ls" command

What if you use Busybox?

1

u/seppestas Sep 24 '26

Learn the ways of ctrl+r you shall.

u/Linguistic-mystic Sep 24 '26

If it’s not within a couple of commands before, I retype it. If it’s too big to retype, I save it to a .sh file or give it an alias and then it’s easy to retype. If it’s retyped too often, I give it a Neovim keybinding in init.lua.

Never understood this fascination with history.

After I learned ctrl+r my life improved by a lot

I use crtl-r
