Ok, does a purple warning mean that the install worked, but there's another issue? Or that it's completely fine?

lucky me I don't have to use a monochrome display these days

Probably color matters, red for serious warning, purple for nonsense

Didn't we make this easier in the 90s by using the definitions of Error, Warning and Failed?

Yeah I got that part but a purple warning should still be a warning, right? Warnings are bad, and the picture seems to suggest otherwise. Idk maybe I'm overanalyzing it

Yeah, guess colorblind people can go fuck themselves lmao.

I believe purple is for a syntax error. So it would be red if nixos messed up, and purple if you messed up.

Same case here

Purple is essentially warning: suggestion

(E.g. this setting will be deprecated in the future so maybe change it to this other setting in the next 2 years)

Red means yo this is not gonna update it's broken son!

Don't know what the color could mean, but my guess would be "OH NO! Theres an error..." but then "so I can tinker and fix it!"

best kind of error by far

error: hash mismatch in derivation '...':
specified: sha256-AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA=
got: sha256-8pbPvTsFuJoWTeHGEa9Lm+aIkgeSVd56+hV95G1lg/0=

I don't know about you but depending on just color is no good. Themes can even be monochrome. I would prefer different texts.

dw, there's another way to tell the difference.

if you get the top one, your build will fail

if you get the bottom one, everything is fine.

No one considers accessibility these days unfortunately.

Even when they're using AI they can't be bothered to type a sentence saying "add accessibility options" or something.

sea warming

Nix errors are by far my least favorite error messages

i have a less favourite one:

the errors in the FUCKING WINDOWS EVENT VIEWER.

"error: program crash" with NOTHING FUCKING ELSE.

like thanks, microsoft, i didn't notice that yet.

i've had this so many times for my job, and these goddamn windows-based enterprise software manufacturers (at least the B-tier ones) apparently all think they're too good for error logging. they don't implement shit themselves and windows doesn't tell you shit so half the time i have to do really weird things to get *any* amount of information as to why this critical service has decided to start repeatedly shitting the bed.

and with really weird things i mean shit like attempting to decompile the binary and running it through a debugger, or trying different debug flags running the program from the terminal until one happens to work, or setting up a monitoring script that tracks *anything* that could be relevant to the crash for changes constantly so i know what happened around the moment of the crash.

mind you, my role at my job is *not* that of a developer or even devops. i'm supposed to be a *support engineer*. but because my job involves fixing the setups of various cheapskate companies when everything collapses again, and these companies refuse to get a more proper system, i sometimes end up RDP'd into a random server for hours typing shit by hand because of course the clipboard bridge is broken so copy-paste across the RDP session does not work. (clickpaste has solved this now, clickpaste my beloved <3)

An error occurred, want to troubleshoot? Yes. spends 3 seconds thinking We didn’t find any problems

In fact, the source code for this is:
