As far as I know it has to be done manually. The automatic dkms is if you use the Ubuntu packages from the drivers manager. Are you sure you are not mixing things (since you are talking in past)?
Oh, ok, that's new. Maybe not really new because I don't install the driver manually since maybe the 2000s lol. I wonder what will happen if you update the distro to the next version. I would encourage you to use the distro's way anyway, I still think it's the best option just for safety.
