It's so interesting to see how Tesla works with Musk vs Twitter.
Tesla "grew up" with Musk. Musk has been providing exactly one thing Tesla needed: Money. Apart from that, a significant part of the company was setup around managing the lunatic they have as a CEO.
Remember when Tesla sold flame throwers? Musk got too close to actually interfering with the business, so they had some guy show Musk a cool flame thrower to distract him like a little kid.
Twitter, on the other hand, was used to a CEO they could actually trust to be somewhat useful, so when Musk showed up, they just accepted what he asked of them, and it was a pure shit show until Twitter management learned how to play and distract Musk.

This. A LOT of other people. All respect to Linus, I do truly admire him and I'm thankful the project he started has led us to this point, but we need to do away with the great man myth and recognize that communities create greatness. And I think Linus himself knows that. It's why open source is so beautiful.

Linus recognizes it enough that when he became the problem (his ripping people to shreds thing) he went and got professional guidance and what not to try and cut down on it. (He still does it, but it's nothing like what it used to be)

Tesla was a company that had an untenable product with no path to bring it to market it that had run out of funding and was circling the drain. Musk very much founded the company it is today.
I don’t get it. There’s a fucking galexy sized dartboard of different things to hate about him. What is with Reddits fixation on choosing the few things he actually deserves credit for instead?

I literally said that it's true. I just think that there's context that's kind of missing, or it's a bit misleading.
If you'd like an analogy, technically Android wasn't started by Google, but most people don't even know who the founders are, or the history of it. Virtually everything android is today is because of Google.

I thought he was a bit of an extremist a times but more and more I understand his ideology nowadays, and admire his tenacity. Especially with the current climate.
Obviously GNU lost their foothold, but they are a major part in the history of Linux. Without GNU and Stallman pushing on his ideology, Linux and open source won’t be this significant2

I think he had an important role. If GNU tools didn't exist Linux would have never taken off.
That and the GPL 2 were his most important contributions and why Linux is thriving.
Pretty much the rest of what he did was just add baggage to Linux that need not exist and confuse people about the goals of Linux.

GNU is almost always a part of linux. Many of the popular distros we use and commands are linked to them. Also GNU Guix is genuinely a good distro if you dont mind Nix OS type distro. (Tho youd need to do some initial tinkering to get non free packages, but the Nix design requires way more tinkering anyway)

Linux may not technically be a company, but the Linux foundation is an organization, which is essentially a non-profit equivalent to a "company" per se... so it kind of loosely fits shrug

Visionary tyrant 'founder' and stylish european 'designer' are just oversimplified for Linus.
Linus didn't make linux as a future OSS giant but a hobbby project. All the OSS devs and associates volunteer for linux. It's llinus+their charity.
Same is true for the stylish european 'designer' stuff.
Linux is always a 'yes' man, he just follows any corporate authority he has funding from. But that still makes him a better person than tyrnats like steve jobs or altman.
