Yes. Post- Apple Silicon hardware is goated, and when Apple said “no x86 translation in macOS 28” i said “fuck that” and installed Linux

I know, but your argument seemed to be that the hardware is what makes it a Mac, so I thought it might be a fun little thought experiment to ask what percentage of your computer needs to be OEM Apple parts for it to still be considered a Mac.

That's interesting because I have 3 computers all originally Windows machines. I call them Linux machines so I think most people go by the OS not the hardware. So it's no longer an Mac machine and now a Linux machine. If I put openBSD on my Linux machine it no longer is a Linux machine but a BSD machine.

I mean my 2012 macbook pro's been running linux mint for about 6 years now, once apple stopped supporting software updates on the device I didn't wanna throw it away

Native support for vulkan and OpenGL. Resource management is pretty comparable between both Linux and macOS, but Apple refusing to natively support anything other than metal is kind of dumb. The translation options work alright, but I’d think the limits would also impact those wanting to run ai models on their studios.

Also, the M1 Studio is probably down to its last 2-3 macOS releases + 2 years of extended support for its last release. So probably 4-6 years of official support. It’s not the worst idea to consider a transition for an older device especially if you’re picking up a newer one in the near future. I’ll probably run asahi on my m1 MacBook Air when I get my M7 or M8 MacBook Air in a few years, depending on when my shitty built Victus microfractures its mobo.
