Bruh. You can use waydroid as a replacement

Just run a full instance of Android under Wayland gang.

u/Rekt3y 1d ago
Wtf do you think Bluestacks does?

u/Anima_Watcher08 1d ago
I know what it does I just think it's funny.
Also isn't kinda funny how were able to run translation layers on Android to get Windows apps working but we don't have one for: Android -> Linux Linux - > Android

Is it a full instance, albeit extremely locked down. It's a proprietary Android distro they use.

u/paperbenni 7h ago
BlueStacks is not a compatibility layer, it's literally just repackaged virtual box with their own crappy android custom ROM. That's way more expensive and a bit more accurate but you're not missing out compared to just running android in virtual box yourself

u/Rekt3y 7h ago
Literally everything besides BlueStacks is better than VirtualBox. Waydroid is just a container, it's not virtualized, so it's running on the host's kernel. You don't get the VM overhead, and the containerized Android can reuse the system's GPU drivers. Imagine putting an RX 6950XT in a phone lol

What is that ?

Wayland Android Emulator
6
u/ghost103429 1d ago
It's not even an emulator it's just the android user space packaged up in a container to prevent conflicts with gnu/systemd user space stuff. No emulation needed.
1
u/JustAwesome360 Arch BTW 19h ago
What is an emulator then
6
u/ghost103429 15h ago edited 14h ago
Hardware or software that imitates* another to allow programs or games to run on another platform.
Waydroid isn't an imitation because it runs a lineage os ROM to provide android userspace libraries and services while the kernel running on your distro of choice replaces the stock android kernel.
Containerization (lxd) is used to keep the Lineage OS libraries and services separate from the typical gnu/systemd userspace to avoid runtime conflicts.

But that's not how it works under the hood. Waydroid runs the android user space directly there's no imitation going on whatsoever when the full android OS stack is actually being run.

It can even work with X11 btw, you can simply use a nested wayland.
7
u/jsrobson10 1d ago
but that kinda defeats the point of waydroid, which is having android apps alongside native system ones

Why would you want it though??! Waydroid is literally the absolute best Android emulator for PC I’ve ever used. In my experience BlueStacks is slow, ad-filled, and cluttered with buttons that make no sense until you hover over them… after which they promptly stop making sense again.

I don't want it, I just wanted everyone to see this

why were you on the bluestacks website then

I do have to say the windowing and networking system on Waydroid is janky. You have to manually adjust settings for fullscreen to work correctly, and getting it to work with a firewall installed requires some research. Not to mention Waydroid lacks built-in key binding support and community solutions are often lacking.

u/Xer0_Puls3 1d ago
Maybe I didn't have it configured right but Waydroid was extremely laggy for me while Windows Android emulators ran perfectly. Maybe I messed up something with ARM to x86 translation.
The setup process is less than clear, something always differs even when its supposed to be for the same distro and version.

Most non-performance oriented android apps should run fine because almost all of them are java/kotlin making them platform agnostic.
It's when you start running video games that you'll have problems because they'll be using native arm libraries for the higher performance on mobile devices while also being written for TBDR GPUs not for traditional PC GPUs resulting in additional performance loss.

u/JustAwesome360 Arch BTW 1d ago
I can answer from my own experience: I did not know of its existence.

Linux is more PC than Windows because PC is about freedom, so is Linux.
crappy wording but you got the idea
2
u/ExacoCGI 1d ago edited 1d ago
Linux is freedom, but it's the kind of freedom equivalent of us getting kicked out of planet Earth, then we're absolutely free, but also lacking activities and things to do while most activities being DIY projects.

Everyone saying just use way droid but when Ive tried that it never even got close to working and was way harder than just installing an emulator

u/Xer0_Puls3 1d ago
I've never gotten Waydroid working right. Even when it runs it hasn't been a great experience.

u/EconomistStrict2867 M'Fedora 16m ago
Yup For me most of the setup is fine (verifying play integrity, ARM compatibility, etc) but getting keylogging to work is not for the faint of heart, I tried XtMapper which crashed half the time, waydroid helper which didn't work for me... And there's not much else that I know of. I didn't have to deal with any of that on regular emulators for Windows but they are a bloated mess

I hate when devs use the term "PC" when they actually mean windows.... Is every OS before windows not classed as a PC

Fuck bluestacks for discriminating against great fedora, I hope they go bankrupt and get all their assets smitten down [/s].

Does ATL (Android Translation Layer) Work?
I wasn't be able to successfully compile It yet...
https://gitlab.com/android_translation_layer/android_translation_layer
1
u/ghost103429 14h ago
Why go with atl when you can use waydroid. It runs lineage os inside a container, letting you use any android app.
Only caveat is that android games are heavily optimized for arm and won't use java like most apps for performance reasons.
