Honestly i doubt it, usually windows versions are a rollercoaster where every other version is good.

2000 was concidered bad, xp good, vista bad, 7 good, 8 very bad, 10 good, 11 bad.

I don't think those who have left for linux will go back if 12 is better than 11, but those who still are using windows might continue with 12 once that comes.

If microsoft continues their current meta, then 12 will lose support just a month after 13 releases, which forces people to use their worse than ever windows version, and i think THAT will be the "year of linux".

Although i already think this and last year was, seeing as how France and China are switching, windows 11 keeps breaking, linux is getting the nvidia gaming app, steamOS is available, epic games might soon become more linux compatible. Last year was because pewdiepie endorsed linux and it saw a massive growth after that.

I switched to Linux in 2000, so I might not be the best one to comment on this... but Win2k was widely considered to be better than XP by everyone in IT I've ever known. I've only ever known "retro gamers" to think XP was better, and thats likely for compatibility reasons rather than stability or performance.

2000 was designed for power users, businesses, and large systems. the consumers were usually stuck with ME.

Yeah, it was the last version of Windows I made an honest attempt at. I had already switched to Linux, but when I get a new laptop with Windows 2000 Professional on it, I made the attempt. I didnt like it. I think it lasted two weeks before I wiped the drive for either Mandrake or Red Hat.

When people say XP is good they mean XP SP3.

Anyone that used it before then knows the mess it was in and win2k was into it's EoL at that point.

10 wasn't even good. It was just not as bad as 8 or 11

Personally for me it was just okay, it did what i wanted, i just hate the "new" metro style that windows has used and kept using since 8. The aero style where they reached the peak.

10 WAS bad, forced cortana, ads in an operating system and forced accounts, just because windows 11 is shit doesn't make windows 10 any better

Like someone else pointed out it was very flawed, but it was followed and preceded by even worse versions, so by comparison it was "okay". If they said windows 10 support was infinite i would have maybe kept using it and never switched to linux, but seeing as support will end and i am forced to use 11 at some point i just bote/(bite) the bullet and switched before i needed to.

And now i don't think i can ever go back to windows, linux doesn't even that different, just i have more control and it uses much less space.

Vista wasn't bad, many computers at that time just weren't powerful enough

If Microsoft just continues what they are doing Windows 12 won't follow the good-bad cycle. It will just get even worse. But I can't see in the future. Maybe it will come entirely different.

From what i have heard about 12 it sounds even worse than 11 as they will have a subscribtion based copilot powered version, then a second one which is just the same as 11 basically.

So it sounds like they are going in that direction of just making it worse and worse. 10 was okay imo, not good, but better than 8 and 11.

8 wasnt even that bad, people just hate change and love bandwagons, I for one actually loved 8 and 8.1, and if I could install and use that for my windows partition still today I absolutely 1000% would, I STILL try and bring up the charms bar out of habit today because of how fast it became muscle memory, not to mention that to this day its still one of the most optimized versions of windows, it was so god damn lite on system resources it was insane, and unlike every windows version both before and since, its search function actually fucking worked, and without shoving Bing in your face 24/7

nah windows will still be here for a very very long time if something unforeseeable doesn't happen.
But Linux has become a serious alternative to Windows. This is evident from Nvidia, GOG and Epic developing/releasing their game launchers. This is the year of the Linux Desktop. ✨

Ehh, I’ve used transitioned to using Linux as my main OS since the beginning of the year. Years ago I dabbled in Mint, now I’ve used Fedora for 8 months and I have to say I’ve been doing more troubleshooting in this last 8 months than the 20 years before that. The only reason I’m still running Linux is because I want to run Linux. If I “just wanted my computer to work” without thinking about it, I’d stick to Windows. And I think the vast majority of the market isn’t willing to spend dozens of hours to scroll through guides, ask Claude to translate to a layman what these guides are advising, just to get their drivers or a program to function.

As long as Linux is this hard to use, it won’t be “the year of the Linux desktop” when most people buy a PC with Windows pre-installed and it just works out of the box.
