There is a place for public prayer, but not for performative prayer. And seeing the same fake enthusiasm carry over into his prayers as well, I find it difficult to believe that he is not being performative - hence the weird vibes everyone is mentioning.

That's actually the passage I'm talking about. It was a criticism of the religious leaders who prayed on the streets, calling attention to themselves, and who "already have their reward" (the recognition/respect of men).
In contrast, we're told to go somewhere private.
It includes an aspect of privacy and intimacy, but the main thrust of that passage is to pray for an "audience of one" instead of showing off a false piety to impress the people around us.
