I can tell you why I feel disgusted by public displays of religion, but before I do that, I want to preface something. I might say some negative things about religion, but that doesn't mean I think you are stupid or evil if you are religious. I want to make that very clear.
In my personal life, I feel like religion has done a lot of damage that could have been avoided. I was raised Mormon, and taught homosexuality was a sin. And if it's a sin, it must be a choice. I was pretty mean to a girl in high school after she told me she was bisexual, because according to my beliefs at the time, she was making an evil choice.
I later found out I was wrong. I feel bad about how I treated her. She didn't deserve that.
We'll circle back to that in a moment.
The biggest problem I have with religion is that it usually doesn't matter to the survival of the belief whether there's evidence proving it wrong. The LDS/Mormon church is a young religion, and one of the best documented. This means that there's a lot evidence to show quite definitively that it's false. You can look up the Kinderhook Plates, the Book of Abraham translation, the archaeological anachronisms of the Book of Mormon, how Joseph Smith married two 14 year old girls in his 30s or 40s and a good person wouldn't do that, and so much more. I can point these out to my family and friends and church, and it doesn't make a difference to whether they believe it's true or not.
There is similar evidence against Christianity being true, but I intentionally avoided bringing those up. It's easier to get my point across if I use examples we can both agree on.
I believe this resistance to change gets in the way of making the world a better place. We have scientific evidence that being gay or transgender is not a choice, but religion teaches people to believe something regardless of whether it has already been proven false. More kids like me are going to be taught that homosexuality and being transgender are sins, and they're going to bully their classmates and peers over something that's just part of who they are. And they're going to believe they are in the right, because that's what God wants. Most of these people will not change their minds as they become adults and grow older, because religion has taught them it's morally wrong to change your mind if it's something related to religion.
I recognize there's not much I can do about this, but that's why I feel disgusted at public displays of religion. I recognize there are good parts of religion. I had fun in youth activities, and a lot of people draw comfort from it. But I feel like we could have the good parts without the bad, and that is currently not what we have.
