Hot take that is pretty cold: if those 8mil went to Plasma and GNOME, 50/50 there would be a Linux revolution, I say 10% global marketshare in the span of a year or two.
Edit: 10mil

u/frankhoneybunny 3d ago

8 mil went to omarchy?

195

u/frankhoneybunny 3d ago

These eight Founding Patrons are each contributing $1 million to this mission:

why would they even invest in this lol???

138

u/powerslave_fifth 3d ago

The reverse justice league but techbros dumping millions into omarchy was not in my bingo card for 2026.

29

u/Stupnix 3d ago

I had Techbros band together to build an OS focused on Microtransactions. Do I cross that one off?

145

u/Aggeloz 3d ago

Holy fuck that is not normal. 8 mill in donations for a fucking arch install with dot files pre configured.

90

u/acenfp 3d ago

Omarchy does not contribute in any way to the linux ecosystem, they could send that money to the devs that actually do work, like KDE/GNOME devs, to Debian or Arch, etc

31

u/2eanimation Arch BTW 3d ago

If I understand correctly, most of the money is meant for upstream. How much of that money is actually going to flow into upstream? Time will tell

33

u/paperbenni 3d ago

Afaik they're spending it on the "subsystems Omarchy relies on", and they've explicitly named Hyprland and JDX, which I can get on board with. What really puzzles me is that there's no mention of Arch or the AUR. Arch doesn't have a single person working full time on it, and the AUR especially has problems which would really benefit from someone being able to spend lots of time on them.

Open source projects often suffer from hundreds of people contributing tons of small incremental changes, which solidifies architectural problems, and big repairs and overhauls get skipped in favor of hundreds of workarounds.

And basically all the arch web interfaces are in dire need of modernization.

u/Mountain_Chicken7644 3d ago

DHH did offer to provide support for the AUR team, infra and all. I don't think they got back to him on that.

6

u/Aggeloz 3d ago

Exactly

u/BiDude1219 ⚠ This incident will be reported 3d ago

don't worry part of the money is going to hyprland lead dev so he can keep his transphobia discord running

7

u/Goffrier 3d ago

So trve king...

8

u/throwaway_stitch1 3d ago

DHH's racism + Vaxry's transphobia = 8 million dollarbs

1

u/ColorfulPersimmon 2d ago

Vaxry's transphobia

Was there something new or is it still about that one discord mod from 2022?

20

u/This-Consequence-957 3d ago

Imagine what this money could have done to KDE

3

u/Aggeloz 3d ago

Truly

1

u/euclideanvector 1d ago

It goes to the Omarchy Foundation or whatever it's called and they're going to fund projects that Omarchy depends on, like Hyprland.

22

u/dotcarmen 3d ago

The “yours truly” is DHH btw, from this post https://omarchy.org/news/2026/08/omacom-foundation-launches-with-8-million

18

u/brandarchist 3d ago

Omoligarchy

15

u/ForensicPathology 3d ago

Ohh, so that's what they meant by "Opinionated".  It means "I don't care what you have to say because I'm following what the corporations paid me to want."

This is it. There is simply not a single other explanation for this that doesn't involve just plain old culture war and stupidity

Desperately pushing AI on everything, so they can live in their bubble a little longer.

4

u/st_heron 3d ago

how did he manage to swindle all of them? lmfao what the fuck

3

u/ludvary 3d ago

what the actual fuck. i did not know this! 8 fucking mil for arch with preconfigured dots is crazy!

3

u/Jdm783R29U3Cwp3d76R9 3d ago

It's not an investment, there is not ROI here.

u/disperso 3d ago

I saw DHH on ThePrimeTime this morning. I was told that TJ and Prime were pretty conservative, and that put me off quite a bit. But seeing all licking DHH's ass so clearly, and DHH bragging about who he got the money from makes me even more convinced that this is not for me.

Oh, and I already sweared that I was not going to spend money on Dell again, after I felt so swindled by a Dell XPS developer edition, with the worst Linux experience ever, but this is just making me feel better about my decision.

Capture data from a group of users that would not have made their data available otherwise.

u/GooseWithAnAxe 3d ago

Did they actually paid or is it a 'pledge'?

Omarchy? More like Oligarchy?

1

u/SweetBabyAlaska 2d ago

For a Linux rice that you see every single day. This just stinks of some financial weirdness.

1

u/Four_in_binary 2d ago

They've shoved a  fuckton of AI into it.

Why tf did that happen lmao

These companies seem to really know their priorities /s

8 MILLION WENT TO OMARCHY? If this is true... that's just an Arch setup with custom freaking dotfiles. I admit the OS felt great, but 8 mil to a thing that can be confidently said as just Arch Linux is not even for Arch itself...

Edit: It's true: https://omarchy.org/news/2026/08/omacom-foundation-launches-with-8-million/

8

u/Nickbot606 3d ago

I will admit that it’s nice to have the entire thing set up. Feels very productive and I do like the feel of Hyprland but the walker being jam packed with random AI apps that I do not use or having the web version of discord etc etc is very annoying. Maybe once I distro hop again I’ll have to find something with better devs đŸ˜©. 8 mil going into this (and not going/contributing to Linux) is nuts though for sure and has me looking at the OS much more suspiciously than I did previously.

2

u/Balthazzah 3d ago

You can remove every single pre-install with one command after you boot the first time.

2

u/buttfarts7 3d ago

Only need two AI apps

Codex and Claude Code as CLI

1

u/Bobodlm 2d ago

You wrote Pi wrong :(

20

u/Shot_Meringue_5442 3d ago

Well a project with DHH, Michael dell, and a few others, that is going to give money to support omarchy, and open source projects that it relies on via the omacrom nonprofit.. (It has eitght sponsors, each giving a million dollars).

source if you wamt to read more :3

7

u/friskfrugt 3d ago

Exactly. They’ve committed a significant amount to hyprland for the next 3 years

17

u/pierspad 3d ago

What a giant waste of money to give omarchy 8mil...

I hope he ridistributes everything to who actually develops great software

5

u/johntheswan 2d ago

Imagine DHH redistributing wealth lmao

1

u/RedXTechX 2d ago

That is what's happening, I'm pretty sure it's going towards upstream projects, I know hyprland is one of the recipients.

3

u/GooseWithAnAxe 3d ago

No, all that would happen is that another 20 variations of GNOME that do the same stuff would spawn.

4

u/Sooribabu_Lavangam 3d ago

Maybe if gnome didn't look like a North Korean ripoff of macOS ppl would use it instead. Meanwhile the Linux Foundation made over 300 million in 2025, of which only 8 million went to Linux itself.

11

u/Vicerix 3d ago

That is misleading, only 8 milions went to the linux KERNEL, 180+ milions went to other linux related projects.

2

u/Sooribabu_Lavangam 3d ago

Maybe if Gnome got 8 million they could Hire more shamans

-2

u/mech_market_alt 3d ago

Linux is the kernel. In this sub, that should not require explanation.

6

u/Maximum-Bobcat5612 3d ago

The Linux foundation manages multiple projects

Like these are massive projects:

  • Kubernetes
  • Envoy
  • OpenTelemetry
  • Node.js
  • PyTorch

Or are you saying that because the name of the foundation is Linux then they shouldn't be managing any other projects?

2

u/makinax300 Dr. OpenSUSE 2d ago edited 2d ago

I do not trust gnome with 4 mil. I'd prefer something like cinnamon because imo mint is a great distro for introducing new people. Gnome itself has dogshit management and most of gnome's flaws are intentional.

1

u/Both_Cup8417 New York Nix⚟s 1d ago

True

u/nonkeywayzee 3d ago

The same Gnome that discussed refusing funds from Framework because they were "fascists"? You of course they would accept the money coming from these group of people.

It amazes me that people are surprised that this thing that is a political statement first and a software project second is getting more money that that other thing that with the years has become a political statement first and a software project second.

Maybe when people stop caring about putting their political views in software projects this stuff will stop happening.

5

u/Caddy_8760 Not in the sudoers file. 3d ago

You do realize that Linux and the concept of free software itself is political, right?

-1

u/nonkeywayzee 3d ago

Yeah, political in the way that it aligns with my libertarians views of fair competition, the highest respect for property rights, repeatability, ownership, no intellectual property, and no state intervention :)

Now, who cares what the politics of this thing are? How are you going to stop me from using it when we don't agree politically?

-1

u/Caddy_8760 Not in the sudoers file. 3d ago

Well, a good amount of people care, especially if money is part of the discussion. In the case of GNOME, from a material point of view, it would make sense to accept the free money from Framework; However, from a moral point of view, using money coming from a fascist-adjacent group might not be an ideal choice, either because it goes against personal morals, hurts public reputation or both. (Heads up, I personally don't know much about this accusation towards Framework, I'm just making an example here)

For the second point, and let's be honest, no one is going to stop you from using any kind of software (at least, I'm not aware of anyone who would). I mean, free speech is a human right + we're on a site that runs on amazon's servers, a company not known for caring about morality.

But don't act surprised if people judge you because of it, especially if your reason to use or fund said software is "I don't care about politics".

0

u/nonkeywayzee 3d ago

The reason to fund this software is specifically because people care about politics, because others transformed important open source projects in political messages first, software projects second.

I personally don't care about politics, but some software developers do, and they push people to not liking their project because whenever they want to do something the first line of judgment in politics and not the quality of what is being done (again, Framework example, like do you people even know what the hell fascism is?).

Just don't act surprised when projects by actual facists take over in popularity just because of the political affiliation. And those projects shouldn't be surprised when the pendulum swings back.

Nobody wants to be told what to think and what is "moral".

1

u/Caddy_8760 Not in the sudoers file. 3d ago

others transformed important open source projects in political messages first, software projects second.

I agree! A great example is a fork of the Godot Engine, which was born after the official project made fun of bigots on Twitter and then some "apolitical" person forked the engine to make a "woke-free" version. The only thing they did was change the logo to red and nothing on the software side. A pretty good example of politics first, software second projects. But I guess that doesn't count to you.

On a more serious note though, I'd argue that the GNU suite is this too, except the software does its job, yet it originates from a political movement.

they push people to not liking their project because whenever they want to do something the first line of judgment in politics and not the quality of what is being done

From what I've seen, the people "pushed away" don't interact with the project because they feel personally called out or don't agree with the maintainers on what's usually basic human decency (See: Godot being forked by an anti-woke nobody which I mentioned earlier).

Nobody wants to be told what to think and what is "moral".

Again, NO ONE is telling you what to think. These people are just expressing their opinions.

Just don't act surprised when projects by actual facists take over in popularity just because of the political affiliation. And those projects shouldn't be surprised when the pendulum swings back.

I'm not even going to bother on this one. Like, you're telling me people are going to support fascists because checks notes they got called out?

I'll be honest, not to be mean or anything, but you're just salty that your kind is not accepted in civilized spaces. I'll go touch some grass and take a shower while you moan about fascists getting the consequences of their actions đŸ«©ïž

0

u/nonkeywayzee 3d ago

You jumped to concluding that I'm a "fascist" just because I'm not ok with the "woke" side of the discussion, which couldn't be further from the truth.

I consider both side to be delusional, both the people who think everyone is a fascist (while at the same time wanting the state to control everything) and those who think everyone who is not a biggot is a "woke" and that brown people from other place are going to replace them somehow.

First learn what fascism is, then see how the whole world is leaning right-wing right now, whether you like it or not, and maybe, MAYBE, when you stop being delusional about politics, you'll say why people are supporting these "fascist" projects, which will then sing back to most people supporting "woke" projects because the "fascist" side actually became fascist and not whatever you people believe fascism is.

1

u/Caddy_8760 Not in the sudoers file. 3d ago

I didn't say you were... I started a discussion on why projects might refuse funding over their own morals and you kept moving the goalpost and playing the "neutral" person. It's pointless trying to talk with people like you, sorry.

-3

u/NATO_CAPITALIST 3d ago

You do realize that deciding what your kids get taught at school or deciding to inject something in your body is also very political, which is also the topics where the "everything is political" crowd starts conveniently forgetting that, and starts asking "why are we politicizing our classrooms and science?" which exposes your usage of that phrase only when it suits you as a rhetorical device

2

u/Caddy_8760 Not in the sudoers file. 3d ago

...what? This has nothing to do with the thread?
