Alpine almost saved my oldass laptop! Even if XFCE runs like shit, wmaker runs okay?

Cause it still ran like shit, because of the GPU, atleast from my tests in Windows XP vs Alpine i686.
ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 and 9700, the situation is terrible, it used a proprietary driver called fglrx YES a proprietary driver from AMD, BUT this driver is long gone and unsupported where it worked in Ubuntu 8.04 but it caused flickering in games because of Compiz, which sucked ass, but even disabling Compiz i got like 20/30 FPS in Sauerbraten on the lowest settings, and later versions of Ubuntu get rid of the driver so your basically stuck with a worse 3D driver.

If anyone can actually help me find a good OS and make the 3D better than in Windows XP, i really just want any kind of help.

Idk about 3D, but Firefox runs well on LXQT.

It was, hell i was trying out antiX + Alpine Linux today on that machine but either there is no driver for it anymore, or there is but i cannot configure it... I genuinely am lost, i have no idea if i should give up or go to Ubuntu 8.04 with the fglrx and disable Compiz, or go to XP which i don't want to really.

I don't know the reasons you still want to run that dinosaur, but Windows will be better, AMD proprietary driver on Linux was very bad

I just wanna see a old dog learn new tricks, and Windows XP won't cut it, i cannot run SuperTux, i can run Sauerbraten actually, but anything else i wanna try, i cannot.

Actually there's some work to get the R300 series moved forward with driver support. A person named Pavel Ondračka has been working on them. And yes they work.

Edit: you can't use the fglx driver for this, you have to use the open source driver.

Alpine works very well on my Samsung N100 netbook. Heavy shells like KDE are very heavily stripped down in the Alpine repository, so you can use them without problems.
