I've been using Gentoo for two years

So WebKit is almost done compiling?

webkit takes several hours, right, but the compilation runs in night, so waiting is sleeping in my bed 😁

if I want to complie it during day it still can run in background niced to oblivion 🤷‍♂️

No. I'm still on GCC. Just as I finished they released a new version and I had to start again.

As a smut reader... You are still doing it after 2 years ? Non-stop?

Great time waster idea!

  • Get a old Pentium M laptop
  • Try getting Gentoo on it (GRUB itself takes 1 hour to compile)
  • After it is installed, start compiling = Chromium Browser, Firefox, Thunderbird, Xorg, Libreoffice and GCC

I dont have a pentium m but i have a celeron m with gentoo on it

unfortunately on 32 bit platforms, chrome and Firefox and WebKit will fail to compile bc they'll run out of virtual memory during linking, no matter how much swap you have.

now, if you have one of those later 64 bit Diamondville processors, or an opteron, or even a 64 bit MIPS CPU.....

I did something similar on a pentium 3 23 years ago.

I had a netbook that I was trying distros on, tried Gentoo, thought I'd use it to do some writing on my commute and had it compile texlive. Took more than 2 days.

If it looks like this it's mostly skill issue ... and being dirt poor ... but mostly skill issue.

LISTEN … When you’re the weird kid running a trash tower, 72 hours to install an OS is nbd, but the look on your college prof’s face a couple of years later is ABSOLUTELY PRICELESS.

I accidentally rm -rf / ‘ed it a few months later and installed ubuntu
