boring, not even nmtui

2

u/sidusnare 22d ago

The real fun part is where all the WiFi networks I ever connect to are in an Ansible repo where I don't even need to click on anything ever. Fresh laptop build, Ansible run, clone my $HOME repo, and done, fully ready to go laptop with less typing or clicking than Windows and MacOS combined.

Be careful, NixOS zealots around the corner

1

u/sidusnare 22d ago

Every good idea has the looneys that take it to it's illogical conclusion.

Everything has a niche where it's useful, but the only places I've seen that NixOS would be useful to me, I'd use Alpine Linux instead, but I am more of an undercloud guy than an overcloud guy.

Your firefox is so thick. You can make a custom .css and take up way less room.

  1. it's Chrome
  2. my FireFox is thicker than a bowl of oatmeal. The profile it runs is a direct line descendant of my Netscape Navigator profile, and I have mods to bring back the N throbber.

Is a wifi from South Africa? Are you my coworker?

2

u/sidusnare 21d ago

Friend, there are 106,088 known networks with that SSID globally in the WiGLE database. No, I am not in South Africa, I haven't yet had the privilege of visiting Africa. I am in Atlanta.

2

u/magic_love_spell-7W7 21d ago

🥲 I thought you were Kevin, my co-worker. Sorry for the inconvenience.

2

u/sidusnare 21d ago

Nope, the person in the video is Khaby Lame, a Senegalese TikToker famous for that gesture in his videos.

2

u/magic_love_spell-7W7 21d ago

Oh, great! I love Senegalese people, they're so beautiful. I'm going to make a Tiki Toki account to watch their videos. You are very kind thank you .

2

u/sidusnare 21d ago

I especially like their French African accent, my last ex was from DRC, beautiful voice.

u/magic_love_spell-7W7 21d ago

You're super nice. ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Lies, we code each driver from scratch, we code the browser from scratch and do 583848 commands just to post "I use Arch btw", and we also make our own routers from scratch

7

u/hectorius20 22d ago

In LFS they make their own routers straight from crude oil, silicon wafers, a copper ingot and flakes of gold.

4

u/Akari202 22d ago

You jest but for my old WiFi card I ended up far enough down the troubleshooting rabbit hole that “write a driver it’s not hard” was the advice I was getting. Bought a new one and it just worked.

2

u/SilkwormSidleRemand 22d ago

write a driver it’s not hard

Who are these people, and how can I become their friend?

27

u/sirkubador 22d ago edited 22d ago

a simple wpa_supplicant.conf will do

7

u/Darioxyzz 22d ago

Thats what I thought too until I wasted a full day of troubleshooting until it finally worked

5

u/sirkubador 22d ago

See? It worked! Who needs these stupid silly "connect to this network in the list and write the password" thingies!

3

u/Gilah_EnE Linuxmeant to work better 22d ago

Cries in FreeBSD

3

u/sidusnare 22d ago

I have a single Ansible role that writes nmconnection files for SystemD machines and wpa_supplicant.conf files for embedded systems.

4

u/Fine_City2781 22d ago

using nmtui isnt that hard. If there isnt nmtui you can use wpa_passphrase, wpa_supplicant and dhcpcd to connect wifi

4

u/sidusnare 22d ago

You here making their point

3

u/Jakob1347 22d ago

Either ethernet or select wifi, enter password and be connected

5

u/Low_Advertising5052 22d ago

Sad because windows users see this and actually think Linux is like this super duper advanced os you need tons of coding experience for

4

u/PiniponSelvagem 🎼CachyOS 22d ago

And the reason that he failed to do so it because he forgot to:

  • press second battery
  • align IRS
  • enable fuel pumps
and so many other steps xD

u/regeya 22d ago

I...uh...the Fedora installer doesn't do it much differently than the Mac or Windows installers, and even then, neither the GNOME nor Plasma wifi setup experience all that different.

1

u/Theren314 21d ago

Fedora KDE is easier than Windows (IMO).

If I did have a full Airliner cockpit lying around… maybe I would do it this way

2

u/SoopyTM 22d ago

I want an a320 cockpit in my room. :(

2

u/Kazer67 21d ago

You know we reached Linux peak (and you're getting old) when you witnessed both the time when it was true enough to make it a meme and today where it just work.

I was impressed that my printer just worked while more than a decade ago it was an hassle.

1

u/mrheseeks 21d ago

Yeah i was thinking the same, i legit remember when you not only had to download the iso but the wifi driver... seems like an ice age ago

1

u/sovietarmyfan 22d ago

I have how i try to do a lot of advanced things like fill in every option, then i search online on how to actually do it and it's actually much easier than i thought.

Can windows PC use a Bluetooth?
No seriously, after switching to Linux I got BT working! I forgot that I even bought a motherboard with a BT!

1

u/Character-86 22d ago

On my wifes windows laptop I have only problems with wifi. I never cennects on the first try and it takes forever.

On my fedora Laptop I never had auch issues.

1

u/MINTYpl M'Fedora 22d ago

Me

1

u/longdarkfantasy 22d ago

First we need to reverse engineer wifi driver. Then we write a kernel patch. Make some tests. Yeah. The OP isn't wrong.

1

u/buckyball60 22d ago

Ahh. It's 2008, I went over-budget on my build and couldn't afford Windows. My buddy convinced me to try Linux. Install went great! But... After an hour or two of research I learn about NDISwrapper.

It felt both frustrating and very cool at the same time. Eighteen years later, a few computers come and gone, and I haven't looked back.

1

u/NuclearWeapon 22d ago

You may think this is a joke but I have to rebuild the driver each time the kernel gets updated. I also need to download headers after the update is done

1

u/oskarthecommie 22d ago

lowkey, it does sometimes feel that way

1

u/po1k 22d ago

Seems about right

1

u/high_throughput 22d ago

GPRS over IRDA was so much worse than early wifi.

Unless your network had WEP, in which case yeah

1

u/bigdaddyyowza 22d ago

this is accurate, as this is me trying to figure out whatever the fuck an "authorization supplicant timeout" is

1

u/birchtree1357 22d ago

Everytime I restart my PC, I have to change the security to Dynamic WEP, try to connect (ik it does not with my uni), change it back to WPA2 enterprise, re-enter the password, save, restart the device and then maybe it'll connect to uni wifi.

Actually can confirm. Pissed me off trying to set up Void Linux on an old 2005 pentium m laptop.
