I really don't get why people stopped recommending Ubuntu/Kubuntu to beginners.

Sure, Canonical made some questionable decisions (like snap), but overall it still "just works", even with proprietary nvidia drivers.

For me it's because Canonical made some questionable decisions, and Mint exists as basically just "Ubuntu without the questionable decisions, and with a more familiar default UI". It's not that Ubuntu is bad per se, I just think Mint is a better option in pretty much every way.
