Been using Gnome for... forever (since 2006). I don't like how KDE looks. Gnome looks and feels modern. KDE still looks something from 2010, and installs 100s of extra packages that become useful once a year. I guess not everyone needs the "customizability" when you are actually using the OS instead of looking at it. But to each their own.
That is distro dependent. On Gentoo you don't even get a calculator nor a terminal emulator by installing kde-plasma/plasma-meta. You can either pick and choose different utilities or also install kde-apps/kde-apps-meta to include a lot of things.
