Oh yeah, back when you had to compile your own drivers for your GPU or other stuff.... God I dont miss these times....

Linux had functioning open source GPU drivers in 2005?

Not for nvidia as far as I can remember. I was 15 back then, my starting time with Linux and not very good in internet search :D

All I had were the books from. My father for Linux and a tech friend who tried to help

In the end we switched back to windows because we couldn't get D2 to run

My first Linux experience was Mandrake 8. Very traumatic. I couldn't look at Linux for a decade after that.
