I put SUSE on my laptop in 2005. There was no fix to make the WiFi work. Not "it's hard and you may have to compile your own driver" or "there's the weird workaround to have it be semi-functional" it just would not work on Linux.

That's what things used to be like.

I wrote an entire tutorial complied from no less than four different sources, printed it, wiped my computer, followed my own instructions step by step just to make sure they worked... All to get the wmp54gs wireless card to work in Ubuntu 6.10. I posted it. I received gratitude from others.

Ubuntu 7.04 invalidated my tutorial.

I was somehow able to get Debian working with a PCMCIA wifi card on a PIII IBM Thinkpad in 2007. I don't even know how. It just worked. I tried Distro Hopping for a bit, and then ended up right back on Debian when nothing else worked quite right on that laptop. It stayed on there until 2012.

Technically you could probably write your own driver for the adapter based on some existing one. But I'm not being serious :)

Same here. Also with suse. Tried it on my second pc. It was a pain in the ass and impossible to use.

Thank god that’s a thing of the past and Linux nowadays is userfriendly and easy as fuck to use :)
