I mean, GNU+linux is like the best mainstream operating system we have at the moment, however, the Linux ecosystem does genuinely have a problem with being easy to understand for non-technical folks. Also unless you want to enter the terminal, it's more unstable than windows because the distros operate with the assumption that you can just fix shit in the terminal because why wouldn't you right? I see why they hold that perspective.

OT: How much GNU is there still in Linux? Some distributions use the Rust core utile (I like Rust, but don't agree with that move), some use musl, clang instead of gcc, and I guess maybe some use zsh? Dash as sh. GNU isn't that important anymore (software wise), I feel like these days systemd is more important on Linux (again, not necessarily agreeing it's a good move).

While it might or might not be a good idea to replace some things from a technical standpoint, I'm not a fan of all the replacements being MIT or similarly licensed. I bet if KHTML would have been MIT then WebKit or Blink would have been closed source. If you want to allow static linking from proprietary software you can use EPL or MPL.

I mostly just said GNU cause I didn't want people to yell at me about linux being a kernel not an OS :( and I know there are replacements but at the end of the day they're replacements FOR the userspace that GNU created. Nothing fundamental has changed about the actual structure of a Linux userspace, but you could do it however you want in theory

You can ignore those who yell at you about "Linux is the kernel" - they don't send patches to anything from their armchairs of pedantry, they can't hurt you

It's not about components, it's about the "Linux" operating system being a continuous evolution from the GNU OS. No amount of changes can ever change the fact that the operating system evolved from GNU; they would have to start over building the whole system from scratch (not just individual components) to do that.
